Mouse Surprise Lands Scandinavian Airlines Flight

Passenger meal opens door to rodent causing emergency landing and itinerary delays

A Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) flight from Oslo, Norway, to Malaga, Spain, experienced a bizarre situation on September 18, 2024, when a mouse jumped out of a passenger's meal, prompting the aircraft to make an emergency landing.

The unusual incident unfolded as the flight was cruising, with passengers enjoying their food, when one woman opened her meal packaging only to find the rodent leap out. Jarle Borrestad, who was seated next to the startled passenger, shared his astonishment via social media, writing, "Believe it or not. A lady next to me opened her food and out jumped a mouse. Now we have turned around and landed at CPH [Copenhagen Airport] for flight changes." His post included some lighthearted humor, showing how chaos unfolded aboard the plane.

While such unexpected encounters aboard flights are rare, airlines enforce strict standards of hygiene and safety, especially concerning rodents. Once the mouse was discovered, SAS took no chances; the crew adhered to specific protocols, necessitating the emergency landing instead of continuing to Malaga. All passengers remained remarkably calm during the incident, which is often attributed to their swift and composed reactions.

Børrestad humorously recounted his response to the surprise visitor: "I pulled my socks over my trousers to stop the mouse from running up my leg!" Despite the panic-inducing scenario, he noted, "We were not stressed at all." Such calmness speaks volumes about their spirits and perhaps also the uniqueness of the situation. Indeed, it was uncanny to see passengers react to the unexpected visitor with good humor rather than widespread panic.

After landing at Copenhagen, passengers underwent some waiting time. Though it turned out to be longer than they might have wished, the airline quickly arranged for them to board another flight to their intended destination of Malaga.

Oystein Schmidt, a spokesperson for SAS, acknowledged the unlikely nature of the incident, stating, "This is something we rarely encounter. We have procedures established for situations like this, which include reviewing our suppliers to prevent future occurrences." Safety is always the top priority, especially considering the potential hazards rodents could pose to aircraft systems, such as chewing through wiring or other components.

While it seems almost comical now, the reality is quite sobering: one mouse could disrupt the safety standards of aviation. Historically, incidents involving rodents have created logistical challenges as other travel operators have similarly experienced woes from unexpected animal guests. This brings to mind occasions when other airlines, like British Airways, faced significant delays — like one flight back in 2017 — due to the sighting of rodents on board. It was reported costs associated with finding replacement aircraft reached around 250,000 pounds.

But it’s not just airlines grappling with these furry surprises. A major train route out of Great Britain recently witnessed disruptions after two squirrels hopped on board, causing people to choose other carriages for their journeys.

Authorities and airlines worldwide recognize the importance of maintaining cleanliness and ensuring pests do not infiltrate their operations—thereby stressing the need for consistent inspections and hygiene practices. The unexpected visitors demand both passengers and crews remain vigilant, particularly as sanitary practices need to be upheld across the globe.

This incident could serve as both cautionary and humorous tale for future travelers and those involved with air travel. Flying certainly can sometimes come with surprises beyond mere turbulence.

With another SAS flight making history from unexpected places due to mouse intrusions, it emphasizes the industry’s preparedness for any situation—from changing flight paths to adopting proactive measures for passenger safety. Who knows what other quirky incidents await us next?
