Mountain rescuers in Romania have been working around the clock, responding to dozens of emergency calls this past weekend. Between February 20 and 21, 2025, nearly 100 individuals were rescued by the teams from Salvamont, the country's dedicated mountain search and rescue service.
According to reports from Salvamont Romania, the national dispatch center received 87 urgent requests for assistance within just 24 hours. The highest number of calls came from the Brașov region, where 20 emergency requests were logged. Following closely were 14 from Sinaia and seven related to incidents requiring intervention from Sulavmont Gorj.
“It has been another intense day for rescuers across the country,” the organization stated on their Facebook page. “During these interventions, 98 individuals were saved. Of those, 28 required transportation to the hospital by ambulances operated by the local emergency services or Salvamont itself, with the rest choosing to leave with family members or friends.” The report also noted the unfortunate occurrence of one case referred to the Medical-Legal Service (IML), reflecting the serious nature of some incidents.
Salvamont's efforts did not stop at just rescues. Among the requests received, 44 calls were for advice and information about various hiking trails and ski areas, showcasing the interest of the public in enjoying outdoor activities even as they acknowledge potential dangers.
“We urge tourists to be careful and responsible when engaging in mountain activities,” the spokesperson continued, stressing the importance of preparation and awareness of conditions before setting out on adventures.
The rapid response and dedication of mountain rescuers underline the importance of public safety measures and the awareness needed for those exploring Romania's beautiful yet sometimes treacherous mountain landscapes.
Emergency responses like these serve as stark reminders of the potential dangers involved with mountain activities, and the importance of local expertise and quick action. Each rescue operation requires not only physical skill and stamina but also significant coordination and knowledge of the terrain. Salvamont's teams continue to exemplify commitment and readiness to respond to such calls, ensuring the safety of outdoor enthusiasts across the region.
Individuals planning to hike or ski are encouraged to respect the warnings from rescue teams, check weather conditions, and inform others of their whereabouts before heading out. This community spirit can significantly contribute to safety and help mitigate the risks associated with mountain exploration.
Salvamont remains vigilant, ready to act should the need arise once more. Their commitment ensures the mountainous areas of Romania can be enjoyed responsibly and safely by everyone.
