Motorsport Legend Eddie Jordan Passes Away At 76

Former Formula 1 team owner and media personality remembered for his contributions to racing and vibrant personality

The Formula One community is mourning the loss of former team owner and media personality Eddie Jordan, who passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at the age of 76. Jordan died in Cape Town after a fierce battle with aggressive prostate and bladder cancer, which had spread to his spine and pelvis. His family confirmed that he passed peacefully with his loved ones by his side.

Known affectionately as "EJ," Jordan significantly impacted Formula 1 as the founder of the Jordan Grand Prix team, which competed in F1 from 1991 to 2005. Under his leadership, the team achieved four race victories and launched the career of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, who made his F1 debut with Jordan in 1991. Jordan had been in treatment for cancer and previously used his platform to encourage others to prioritize their health. "Go and get tested, because in life you have got chances. Go and do it. Don’t be stupid. Don’t be shy. Look after your body, guys," he advised on his podcast, urging listeners to take their health seriously.

Jordan’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from within the motorsport community. F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali described him as a “protagonist of an era of F1” and said, “With his inexhaustible energy, he always knew how to make people smile, remaining genuine and brilliant at all times. Eddie will be deeply missed.”

Flavio Briatore, a former rival and close friend, reflected on their long friendship, expressing sorrow at Jordan's passing. “Eddie was a great individual, who for decades always brought a smile to the entire F1 paddock. His presence across the entire F1 world will be greatly missed.” Briatore helped secure Schumacher’s services from Jordan back in 1991, when the young driver was taken by Benetton.

Christian Horner, the current Red Bull team principal, also paid tribute, recalling the advice Jordan gave him as a budding driver in 1991. “Eddie was a hugely colorful character who... always full of energy and fun to work with. Formula One has lost a legend and we will miss his wit and his Irish charm.”

Aston Martin team principal Andy Cowell praised Jordan's legacy, calling him “one of the all-time motorsport greats” and noting that his vision laid the foundations for the team’s evolution to its current identity. Cowell stated, “He was a one-off, a wonderful human being, and a charismatic leader who founded this team and took it to F1 in 1991.”

Jordan’s contributions encompassed more than race results; he was known for his extravagant personality and strong opinions, as well as his ability to engage with fans and media alike. After selling his team in 2005, he embraced a successful career in broadcasting and became a beloved figure on British television. His distinctive style and humor made him a favorite among audiences and pundits.

“EJ brought an abundance of charisma, energy, and Irish charm everywhere he went. We all have a huge hole missing without his presence. He will be missed by so many people, but he leaves us with tonnes of great memories to keep us smiling through our sorrow,” the family statement shared by the rugby club London Irish, where Jordan was a patron, read.

Jordan entered Formula 1 after establishing his racing team in lower-level series, creating a name for himself and forging relationships that would shape his career. Notably, he gave Michael Schumacher his debut race when regular driver Bertrand Gachot was jailed. This defining moment not only marked Schumacher’s ascent to superstardom but established Jordan’s reputation for talent management within the competitive world of racing.

The evolution of Jordan's team into what is currently known as Aston Martin underscores his lasting influence on the sport. Throughout its history, Jordan Grand Prix became a symbol of how independent teams could rise to prominence in a manufacturer-dominated sport.

As tributes continue to flow, it’s clear Eddie Jordan will be remembered not just for his contributions to racing but also for the joy and laughter he brought to those around him. Many in the motorsport community shared personal anecdotes that highlight his spirited personality and relentless passion for racing.

The Irish government acknowledged Jordan’s legacy, with Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris stating, “Eddie’s impact on the world of motorsport was truly remarkable. His passion, vision, and leadership shaped the sport and inspired so many. His legacy will live on.”

Even beyond the world of motorsport, Jordan’s larger-than-life character established connections that resonated far and wide. Eddie Jordan leaves behind a robust legacy of passion, resilience, and innovation that will inspire future generations.
