Mother And Son Shot Inside Home In Rio

A tourist was also shot during an attempted robbery in the city over the weekend.

A mother and son were shot inside their home in Chapadão, Costa Barros, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro early Monday morning, April 7, 2025. The 17-year-old teenager was grazed by a bullet on the head, while his mother sustained a gunshot wound to the arm. According to the Military Police, there was no operation in the community at the time of the incident.

Emergency responders from the 41st BPM (Irajá) were dispatched to assist the victims as they arrived at the UPA (Emergency Care Unit) in Costa Barros. The Getúlio Vargas State Hospital reported that both mother and son are in stable condition.

In a separate incident the day before, a tourist from Minas Gerais, identified as Vinicius Cardozo Moreira Dias, was shot during an attempted robbery near the port area of Rio de Janeiro. Vinicius, a civil engineer who was on his honeymoon aboard a cruise ship, was accompanied by his wife and his in-laws when the attack occurred.

On Sunday afternoon, April 6, 2025, Vinicius was wearing a thick gold chain when he was approached by a thief on a motorcycle. The assailant attempted to snatch the chain, but Vinicius fought back, resulting in a physical struggle. During the confrontation, he was shot in the face and chest.

Coast Guard agents arrived quickly on the scene and transported Vinicius to the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital in downtown Rio. The assailant, who initially abandoned his motorcycle, was pursued by officers from the 5th BPM (Praça da Harmonia). The chase continued as the suspect attempted to escape in a vehicle.

After abandoning the vehicle, the suspect fled into Morro do Pinto, where he was apprehended by agents from the Pacifying Police Unit (UPP) of Providência. The case has been registered at the Central Police Station (4th DP), which is investigating the attempted robbery followed by attempted homicide.

Currently, there are no updates on Vinicius's health condition as he remains hospitalized following the incident. His family and friends are anxiously awaiting news as they hope for his recovery.

These two incidents highlight ongoing concerns about violence and crime in Rio de Janeiro, particularly in areas frequented by tourists. The shooting of the mother and son, as well as the attack on Vinicius, raise questions about public safety and the effectiveness of law enforcement in curbing violent crime.

In light of these events, authorities are urged to enhance security measures to protect residents and visitors alike. The Military Police have stated that they are conducting preventive patrols in the region, particularly in the Pedreira Community, to deter clashes between rival criminal factions and to suppress vehicle and cargo theft.

As the investigation into the attempted robbery continues, the local community remains on high alert. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the police to help maintain safety in their neighborhoods. The incidents serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating crime and ensuring the safety of the public.

In response to these violent occurrences, community leaders are calling for more resources to be allocated to police departments and for increased collaboration between law enforcement and local organizations. They emphasize the importance of community engagement in tackling the root causes of crime.

As the situation develops, both families affected by these incidents are hoping for justice and a swift resolution to the ongoing violence that has marred their lives. The community stands united in their desire for a safer environment free from the fear of violence.
