Moscow's Evolving Views On Trump And US Relations

Disappointment grows as Kremlin shifts from celebration to caution over electoral prospects

When Donald Trump surprised the world by winning the 2016 election, many Russians raised their glasses to toast what they hoped would be the beginning of improved relations with the United States. Among them was Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the flamboyant leader of Russia's Liberal Democratic Party, who famously purchased 132 bottles of champagne to celebrate the outcome. That moment appeared to signal optimism for Kremlin officials convinced Trump would herald significant shifts, including lifting sanctions and possibly acknowledging Crimea's annexation.

This sense of jubilation didn’t last long. Just the day after Trump’s victory, Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of the Russian state-funded channel RT, enthusiastically shared her plans to drive around Moscow waving an American flag. Other prominent figures celebrated with similar fervor, even recounting anecdotes of drinking champagne and smoking cigars to toast the new president.

Back then, the spirit around the city gave off vibes of hope. Many believed Trump would ease tensions and put American criticisms of Russia, especially concerning human rights, on the back burner. Konstantin Remchukov, the publisher of Nezavisimaya Gazeta, underlined this belief by stating, “The value of Trump was he never preached on human rights issues in Russia.” Yet the optimism quickly dissipated as Trump, during his presidency, slapped hefty sanctions on Russia, resulting in widespread disappointment among Russian officials.

Fast forward to today, and the Kremlin's tone is markedly more cautious as the possibility of Trump’s return to power looms large. President Vladimir Putin’s peculiar endorsement of 2020 Democratic candidate Kamala Harris—widely regarded as tongue-in-cheek—further highlights this shift. While Harris has taken a strong stance against Russia, labeling Putin as “a murderous dictator” and supporting aid to Ukraine, Trump's leniency toward Moscow contrasts sharply.

The recent discord between both countries seems to have paved the path for Russian officials to pivot toward viewing Trump with skepticism. With the upcoming elections stirring discussions, there’s speculation within the Kremlin about the benefits of witnessing chaos resulting from closely contested outcomes.

Climbing tensions have led to the realization among various Russian leadership figures about the dire state of US-Russian relations since Trump’s tenure and now under President Biden. A recent comment from the Russian ambassador to Washington painted the grim picture of relations “falling apart” after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine escalated following talks between Biden and Putin. Herein lies the irony: just as Trump’s unexpected victory provoked fireworks of hope, the aftermath brought forth waves of disillusionment, encapsulating years of strained diplomacy.

Reflecting on this historical backdrop, many Russians today display mixed sentiments toward America and its political figures. A stroll through Moscow reveals varied opinions. Some, like Igor—who was fishing on the banks of the Moscow River—express vehement disdain for the US, claiming, “I want America to disappear. It creates wars everywhere.” Conversely, there are those like Nikita, who long for peace between the two nations, voicing hopes for friendship and respect amid political tumult.

The increasingly polarized public opinions resonate through various forums across the country. Interestingly, there appears to be some acceptance for the possibility of female leadership, with citizens such as Marina indicating, “It would be great if a woman became president.” This sentiment captures the broader intrigue among Russians, considering the dynamics of gender roles within leadership, something they feel must be acknowledged.

Notably, even as optimism wanes, the specter of chaos arising from the upcoming elections could appeal to the Kremlin. Some experts suggest the instability could divert US attention from its foreign affairs, chiefly its commitments to Ukraine. A tighter race, hinging on the whims of voters, may present opportunities for Russia to exploit paradoxes within the American political fabric, thereby recalibring approaches based on the outcomes and instabilities observed.

The echoes of past cooperation, particularly during the late 1980s, loom large, where US and Russian leaders made efforts to bridge differences. This was represented through the collaborative initiatives of Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, who sought nuclear reduction measures. Such moments seem like distant memories now, overshadowed by increasing hostility and divergent pathways taken since.

Despite the recent turmoil, Russian perspectives present enriching narratives underscoring aspirations for stability and peace. Treading carefully through the multifaceted relationships between the US and Russia is becoming increasingly necessary. The underlying anxieties about continuing tensions inspire many Russians to hope for governance based on dialogue, respect, and mutual cooperation rather than conflict and denigration. Time will reveal what awaits both nations moving forward.
