Moscow Mufti's Comments On Ded Moroz Trigger Backlash

Ildar Alyautdinov's remarks spark debate over cultural values amid holiday traditions.

The recent comments made by Ildar Alyautdinov, the Mufti of Moscow, have ignited outrage among many Russians, particularly during this holiday season. Alyautdinov categorically stated on December 26, 2023, "Ded Moroz and his granddaughter Snegurochka are fictional characters, so believing Muslims associate them only with cartoon heroes, nothing more. They have no miraculous power." His remarks have raised eyebrows, especially since they came shortly after he faced scrutiny for advocating polygamy within the Muslim community, which the Prosecutor General had to intervene and retract.

Kirill Kabanov, a member of the Presidential Council for Human Rights, did not hold back on his criticism, describing Alyautdinov's assertions as verging on radicalism. Kabanov stated, "When radicalism and aggression start to go too far, it resembles unhealthy nonsense. This is by no means funny." These comments are particularly sensitive as they coincide with the spirit of the New Year—an occasion deeply embedded with cultural significance.

Alyautdinov's declarations appear to undermine centuries of tradition and the joyful cultural ethos surrounding Ded Moroz, who is emblematic of celebration and joy during the winter holidays. Kabanov emphasized how these statements could be detrimental, arguing, "Such provocative statements with extremist undertones violate Russian laws and traditions." He also suggested there should be consequences for such remarks, appealing for law enforcement agencies to investigate.

The Moscow Mufti's comments have provoked strong feelings, leaving many to question the underlying motives. Kabanov insisted, "Anyone who does not like our values and way of life should leave Russia," indicating the polarizing effect of Alyautdinov’s rhetoric. There’s been much discourse about the relevance of characters like Ded Moroz, who serve not only as symbols of holiday cheer but also as connectors between generations and as part of the collective consciousness of Russian culture.

Critics of Alyautdinov argue he undermines the fulfillment many find through the joyous mythos of New Year celebrations. Supporters of traditional practices assert the importance of sharing these cultural narratives with children, fostering magic and wonder. Some psychologists have noted the detrimental impact of denying the existence of beloved figures like Ded Moroz on the imaginations of youngsters. Indeed, there's scholarly discussion surrounding how these narratives shape childhood experiences and values.

Public opinion has been sharply divided, with some feeling empowered by Alyautdinov’s stance, viewing it as a call for honesty, whereas others perceive it as dangerous to the cultural fabric of the nation. Kabanov's comments encapsulate this strife: "Those who deny our traditions should think about moving to countries whose culture is closer to them." It appears clear he believes Alyautdinov's beliefs fall far outside accepted norms within Russia.

With Alyautdinov's remarks and the ensuing backlash indicating strained cultural dialogues, it’s possible the future may see continued friction between modern interpretations of tradition and those preferring to uphold long-standing beliefs. Kabanov, reflecting on the need for respect and adherence to the Russian way of life, insists, "Those who deny our traditions and cultural heritage are at odds with what it means to be Russian. We must protect our values, especially around such cherished times as New Year."

Against this backdrop, it remains to be seen how the Islamic community and broader Russian society will navigate this divide, especially as we move past the holiday season. The contrasting beliefs within this narrative reflect not just on the importance of Ded Moroz, but also on the ways traditions can be interpreted and reinterpreted. Alyautdinov's comments have certainly set the stage for what promises to be rigorous discussions going forward, as both sides seek to define the essence of Russian cultural identity.
