Morning Musume's Kitagawa Rio Apologizes For SNS Leak

The idol acknowledges her immature actions after personal posts circulate online, causing fan backlash.

On April 14, 2025, Kitagawa Rio, a 21-year-old member of the idol group Morning Musume. '25, publicly apologized for the recent leak of her social media posts on the group's official blog. The posts, which had been circulating online, included personal reflections and complaints about fellow group members, as well as unauthorized photos of them. Kitagawa acknowledged her responsibility, stating, "I sincerely apologize for hurting the members and fans due to my immature actions," and confirmed that all the leaked content was indeed authored by her.

In her blog post, Kitagawa explained that the controversial posts originated from about two years ago when she was exchanging daily life updates and work-related experiences with friends via social media. "Everything currently circulating is written by me and is accurate," she stated, emphasizing her regret over the incident. The young idol expressed profound remorse, adding, "What I did is certainly not forgivable. I deeply reflect on my actions. I am truly sorry for this incident."

This incident is not Kitagawa's first brush with controversy. Earlier in January 2025, she faced criticism for the leak of private photos featuring herself with a man. At that time, she also took to her blog to apologize, confirming the authenticity of the photos and explaining that the individuals in the images were her university friends. "I apologize deeply for the concern and trouble I have caused to everyone who supports me and my fellow members of Morning Musume," she wrote then.

The recent leaks have sparked a significant reaction from fans and the online community. Some expressed support for Kitagawa, noting that acknowledging her mistakes was a positive step. One fan commented, "It’s important to recognize the member's response and the relationship within the group, and I will continue to support them." However, others were less forgiving, questioning how Kitagawa could be forgiven for actions that they deemed severely damaging to the group’s reputation. Comments like, "I don’t understand how Kitagawa Rio can be forgiven for this information leak, which could destroy the overall trust in the group," reflect the mixed sentiments among fans.

Moreover, this isn't the first time a member of a Hello! Project group has faced such issues. In February 2020, Akari Takeuchi, a member of Angerme, suspended her activities after similar leaks of her social media posts, which violated the group's rules. Similarly, in October 2020, Risa Odate from Tsubaki Factory faced suspension due to leaked screenshots from her anonymous account that contained complaints about her group and its members. These past incidents highlight the potential repercussions of social media mishaps within the idol industry.

Kitagawa, who joined Morning Musume in 2019 as a 15th-term member, has garnered attention for her clear voice and appealing looks, contributing to her popularity. However, the recent controversies have raised questions about the pressures idols face regarding their public personas and private lives. The incident underscores the delicate balance idols must maintain between their personal expressions and the expectations of fans and management.

As the situation unfolds, many are watching to see how the group and its management will handle the aftermath of the leaks. Will Kitagawa be able to regain the trust of her fans and fellow members? Only time will tell, but her public acknowledgment of the issue is a significant step in the right direction.

In a world where idols are often held to impossibly high standards, Kitagawa's situation serves as a reminder of the human side of these public figures. They too make mistakes and must navigate the complexities of fame, privacy, and accountability.
