Montreal Victoire Continues Dominant Winning Streak

Captain Marie-Philip Poulin shines as team secures back-to-back victories, bolstering PWHL standings.

The Montreal Victoire's remarkable winning streak continues to capture the attention of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) as they celebrated two important victories this week. After securing a 4-1 win over the Ottawa Charge, the team followed up with another hard-fought win, edging the Toronto Sceptres 4-3 in a shootout. These wins not only highlight the Victoire’s resilience but also showcase their growing chemistry on the ice.

Captain Marie-Philip Poulin played a pivotal role, leading by example with significant contributions during both games. Despite battling illness, Poulin netted three goals against Ottawa, replicative of legendary performances like Michael Jordan’s famed “Flu Game.” After the game, Poulin reflected on her performance, stating, "I think being able to come together... we put a lot of pressure on her, and Ann-Renée [Desbiens] kept us in the game – her saves were incredible tonight." Her continued excellence places her at the forefront of the league with eight goals this season.

The game against Ottawa had its challenges. Early on, Ottawa took the lead when former Victoire player Tereza Vanišová scored. The first period saw Montreal struggle with only six shots on goal, failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities. But the team regrouped, and the second period marked a dramatic turnaround. After Poulin equalized just over two minutes in, Jennifer Gardiner, with her impressive performance, scored to give Montreal the lead, demonstrating her integral role within the team.

Rookie Gardiner shone brightly, contributing one goal and two assists against the Charge, indicating her growing impact as part of this competitive lineup. Gardiner’s ability to support Poulin and other star players not only reinforced the team’s depth but also demonstrated the skills incorporated through this year's draft; as the coaching staff recognized their well-rounded roster, stating, "I think we really drafted well this year..."

Following their victory over Ottawa, Montreal faced the Toronto Sceptres just one night later, marking another intense showdown. This time, Laura Stacey made her comeback after 18 days out with injury, adding significant firepower to the Victoire’s arsenal. With her assertive presence on the ice, she logged over twenty minutes of playtime, assisting consistently and even scoring during the game, much to the delight of fans at Place Bell.

Stacey expressed her joy upon returning, emphasizing her eagerness to reconnect with teammates: "It was honestly just so much fun to be back... it's always tough sitting in the stands." Her triumphant return was met with cheers as she played at multiple lines, showcasing her versatility—even scoring the key goal during the third period as the game intensified.

The match against Toronto saw both teams testing each other’s defenses, with Montreal preserving composure under pressure. Coming down to the final moments of the game, the Sceptres tied the match, pushing it to the shootout where both Poulin and Stacey notched goals to seal the win. Ann-Renée Desbiens’ stellar performance as goaltender was instrumental as she made 37 saves throughout the game, maintaining the team’s high standing against rising competition.

Following these victories, Montreal holds the top position in the PWHL standings, boasting a record of 7-2-1-2. Their success can largely be attributed to the ability of players throughout the roster to contribute consistently, with 17 players scoring across the team's five wins out of their last six games. This stat reflects the depth of talent on the Victoire roster, confirming their status as contenders for the championship.

Up next, the Montreal Victoire prepares to host the Toronto Sceptres again as they seek to maintain their lead. With Poulin at the helm, backed by Gardiner’s exciting performance and the inspiring return of Stacey, the Victoire is set to challenge any obstacles, claiming their position as the team to beat this season.

Fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming matchup as the Victoire aim to continue their winning streak and build upon their chemistry. With every game, they prove their capabilities and championship potential, not just as individuals, but as thrumming components of this vibrant team dynamic.
