A statue honoring the late U.S. Representative John Lewis, revered as a civil rights icon, was unveiled recently at Legacy Plaza in Montgomery, Alabama. This significant tribute, titled "Steadfast Stride Toward Justice," marks the first life-sized representation of Lewis within his home state, which has historical ties to his extraordinary contributions to the civil rights movement.
The statue joins the esteemed company of other civil rights leaders, with neighboring monuments dedicated to Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It was sculpted by the talented Basil Watson, who also created the other two statues. These works collectively stand as powerful reminders of the struggles endured and the successes achieved during the fight for racial equality.
"Every state owes John Lewis so much for his role as a guiding light out of the darkness of Jim Crow and racial segregation," remarked Bryan Stevenson, Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). Stevenson emphasized the importance of Lewis' courage, stating, "He created opportunities we celebrate across our public spaces—be it on sports fields or community areas. His bravery made all of this possible."
The statue's location is poignant. It sits just steps away from where the Selma to Montgomery voting rights march concluded—a historic event where Lewis was severely injured by police, leading to widespread awareness and eventual legislative reform with the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This moment, often referred to as "Bloody Sunday," galvanized the nation and highlighted the brutal reality of the civil rights struggle.
During the ceremony, family members of Lewis, local dignitaries, and community members gathered to honor his legacy. "John Lewis inspired countless individuals to advocate for justice and equality. His humility and unwavering dedication to helping marginalized communities resonate deeply, especially today. We are honored to celebrate his remarkable life and leadership at Legacy Plaza," stated the event organizers.
Legacy Plaza, beyond housing these powerful works of art, serves as a cultural hub for education and reflection. It is strategically placed across the street from the EJI’s Legacy Museum, which offers insights on the history of slavery, racial injustice, and the continuing fight for civil rights. The plaza also features other significant art, including memorials to civil rights marchers.
John Lewis, whose roots trace back to Pike County, Alabama, has left an indelible mark on American history. After serving on the Atlanta City Council from 1981, he was elected to Congress and represented Georgia’s 5th District for 17 terms. Despite facing incredible obstacles, Lewis continued to advocate for civil rights until his passing at the age of 80 in 2020.
The event to honor Lewis wasn’t just about the statue; it was about celebrating his legacy and ensuring future generations understand his sacrifices and the pivotal role he played during one of the most significant movements for social justice.
