Monterrey Falls 2-1 To FC Juárez Amid Defensive Woes

Rayados struggle defensively as Juárez capitalizes on set-pieces for victory.

Monterrey suffered yet another setback, this time against FC Juárez, losing 2-1 at the Estadio Olímpico Benito Juárez on February 8, 2025. This defeat continues to highlight the defensive frailties plaguing the Rayados as they struggle to find their rhythm this season.

The match began with both teams feeling each other out, but it was Monterrey who could have taken the lead when Sergio Canales squandered a great opportunity to score at the 26th minute, missing the target from inside the box. Despite this early chance, it was FC Juárez who drew first blood.

At the 36th minute, Jesús Murillo scored the opening goal for Juárez, heading the ball past the Monterrey goalkeeper, Mochis Cárdenas, after capitalizing on poor defensive marking by Nelson Deossa. This goal shifted the momentum firmly in favor of the Bravos, who went to halftime leading 1-0.

The second half saw Juárez doubling their advantage shortly after the restart. At the 62nd minute, Óscar Estupiñán scored another header, this time from a corner kick, with the assist credited to José Luis Rodríguez. This time, it was Fidel Ambriz who failed to track Estupiñán, leading to the lapse and Juárez's commanding 2-0 lead.

Despite the deficit, Monterrey showed resilience, ramping up their efforts to claw back. They finally found the net when Canales, who had been persistent throughout the match, scored a stunning goal with just seconds remaining on the clock, making it 2-1. This late goal came at the 95th minute during stoppage time, but it was too little, too late for the Rayados.

Even though Monterrey delivered some promising attacks toward the end, culminating with Canales' goal, the weathered Juárez defense managed to maintain their composure and secure the victory. The victory lifted Juárez to 6th place on the Liga MX table, marking them as serious contenders for the Liguilla, or playoffs, with 10 points amassed from 6 matches.

On the other hand, Monterrey's disappointing standings continue as they languish at 12th place with only 6 points from 18 possible and face mounting pressure to improve. The team is hopeful for the impending arrival of Sergio Ramos to boost both morale and performance. They will have to overcome their defensive woes quickly, as the upcoming match against Querétaro is fast approaching.

Reflecting on this match, it's clear the Rayados have serious defensive issues to address if they wish to change their fortunes. With Ramos's presence imminent, fans hope his experience and leadership will guide them back to winning ways and potentially secure their spot in the playoffs.

All eyes now turn to Monterrey’s next encounter, which is set for February 16, 2025, where they will seek redemption and to re-establish their standing by taking on Querétaro, hoping to leverage their new star signing to turn the team’s luck around.
