BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Rocking R Bar is gearing up for yet another lively celebration as Montana State football fans prepare for the upcoming game. The bar, known for its energetic atmosphere during game nights, has become the go-to spot for supporters throughout the playoff season. Will Hope, the manager of the Rocking R Bar, described the atmosphere during the games. "It is, just craziness and it's been awesome. I mean, it's the best thing I've ever seen in my life. Everyone glued to the TVs, and then when something happens or something good happens, I mean, the whole bar just explodes in celebration. Then, you know, if something doesn't happen, it's a little quieter, and then we just blow up again, especially right after a win," he said.
For the upcoming game, the Rocking R Bar promises several exciting offers for fans. Attendees can compete for $100 gift cards by showing the most spirit, enjoy $16 all-you-can-eat wings, and partake in $3 Bobcat shots. They truly ramp up the excitement with free Jello shots served every time the Cats score a touchdown. To keep the energy high, the MSU Spirit Squad will also be on hand to help rally the crowd. Hope recommends arriving early to secure the best spots, as the venue is expected to be packed.
Meanwhile, speaking to the deep connections between past and present Bobcats, Jan Stenerud—arguably the greatest kicker to emerge from Montana State University—recently reflected on his storied career. Known for his remarkable accomplishments with the Kansas City Chiefs after his time at MSU, Stenerud fondly recalled his unexpected foray onto the football field. "Number 12, that's the number they gave me my senior year. It was actually my first year of football," he shared, sounding proud of his beginnings.
Stenerud's incredible 59-yard field goal against the University of Montana Grizzlies in 1965 not only set a new record but also showcased his talent to professional teams. He was initially set to return to Norway following his college career but decided to stay at MSU for another year when he learned he could get paid for his kicking prowess. "I said pro you mean I get paid for kicking the football and he said yes," Stenerud recalled, reflecting on the pivotal moment of his career.
Looking back, Stenerud mentioned how much he cherished his time as a Bobcat, reminiscing about his first game. "Probably my first game because I went to all the games because that's what all the students did and it was a big party," he said, heartwarming as he spoke of the fun and camaraderie he experienced. This sense of community remains impactful for the Bobcats who proudly cheer for their team.
Stenerud continues to support MSU football wholeheartedly, having kept up with every game since he left school. "To be a Bobcat was very important, so when we left school, all of us at Montana State, we love the Bobcats," he affirmed, indicating the bond forged during his college years. Looking forward to the upcoming game, he expressed optimism for the Bobcats' chances, stating, "Montana State is favored by a few points and I think they're going to do it and bring it home." His confidence reflects not just personal hope but embodies the aspirations of many dedicated fans.
Stenerud's connection to Montana State remains strong. He fondly remembers his university years as the best of his life, stating, "It was the best time of my life. Being a student, my kids went to school there, great school of course." During his visits to Bozeman every summer, he enjoys the golf scene and the stunning views of Gallatin Valley.
These vibrant connections between past players and current fans highlight the essence of Montana State University as not just an educational institution, but as the heart of a community. Whether fans are cheering at the Rocking R Bar or alumni reflect on their college memories, the spirit of the Bobcats resonates deeply, linking generations together and fostering pride within the Bozeman community.
