BOZEMAN — The Montana State Air Force ROTC is making strides to revive its 5K "Sweat for the Vets" race, an event designed to bring the community together in support of the nation’s military. Montana State Junior Gavin Birch, a member of the Air Force ROTC, is passionate about the event, stating, “Really seeing the development of myself as well as my peers within the program just proves how well it works.”
Birch explained that the race was held previously and is being revitalized this year. He noted, “We put it on a couple of years ago and we kind of just revitalized it this year.” The race supports two non-profit organizations, Big Sky Bravery and Warriors and Quiet Waters, with 75% of the proceeds directed to these causes and the remaining 25% benefiting the Air Cats Club.
According to Brian Gilman, the CEO of Warriors and Quiet Waters, “They have been incredibly supportive of our organization and we try to find ways to spread awareness about the organization to fuel our mission.” Gilman emphasized the importance of the funds raised, stating that it will aid in “continuing to bring out active-duty individuals to Montana.”
Jeremy Keller, Chief Program Officer of Big Sky Bravery, echoed these sentiments, expressing: “The money will go towards our active mission.” This collaboration with the Air Force ROTC showcases the ongoing relationship between these organizations to better support military members.
Birch encourages community participation, urging locals to join the event either by running or walking. He passionately spoke about the importance of solidarity, saying, “Come out and show up and support the community, right? Whether they want to run or walk.” His message is about not just raising funds but also about fostering community spirit.
The 5K race is set to take place at Gallatin County Regional Park on April 19, 2025. Registration for the event is priced at $25, making it accessible for a wide range of participants. For those interested in joining or seeking more information, details are available on the Sweat for the Vets website. The event aims to not only honor veterans but also to support current service members through community engagement.
This revival of the Sweat for the Vets race reflects a broader trend of community-driven events seeking to support military personnel and their families. Initiatives like this foster awareness and financial support for organizations dedicated to serving those who have served our country.
Both veterans and active military members symbolize commitment and courage, and events like these serve as reminders of the sacrifices they make. The Montana State Air Force ROTC and its partners hope that this race will not only raise funds but also strengthen community ties while actively engaging individuals in a shared mission of supporting the military.
As the race date approaches, excitement is building within the community. The collaboration between the Montana State Air Force ROTC and veteran support organizations showcases the potential of engaged citizens coming together to make a difference. Every step taken in this 5K is not just a run or a walk; it’s a tribute to those who serve.
