Montana State Battles North Dakota State For FCS Championship Glory

Despite valiant efforts from Tommy Mellott and the Bobcats, North Dakota State secures the title once again.

The Montana State Bobcats faced off against the North Dakota State Bison in what became one of the most thrilling FCS Championship games at Toyota Stadium, Frisco, Texas, on January 6, 2025. With the stands packed and excitement palpable, both teams entered the game determined to claim the coveted title.

From the start, it was evident this championship would be hard-fought. North Dakota State, known for its storied football tradition, took early control of the game. The first quarter featured standout performances from Bison quarterback Cam Miller, who skillfully advanced down the field, scoring twice on runs. By the end of the first quarter, North Dakota had established dominance with a 14-0 lead.

Montana State was quick to respond, though, and the potential of their quarterback, Tommy Mellott, was apparent. The Bobcats managed to regain some momentum with hopes soaring among the fans. Struggling initially, Montana State's offensive arsenal had less to show than expected, accumulating only 45 total yards by the end of the first quarter.

After the initial shock, Montana State finally made it on the board with a field goal midway through the second quarter, trailing 14-3. This drive took over eleven minutes, showcasing Montana's persistence and determination to get points on the board. Despite being down, fans were hopeful, encouraged by the Bobcats' ability to stall North Dakota's offense, which had rolled over them early on.

At halftime, the Bison held onto their 21-3 advantage. The second quarter ended dramatically, with North Dakota finding the end zone with just 12 seconds left on the clock, capping off their drive with precise completion from Miller to receiver Bryce Lance as part of his spectrum of offensive plays.

After halftime, things began to turn around for Montana State. The Bobcats struck first after the break, closing the gap with an impressive 75-yard drive culminating in a one-yard rushing touchdown from Scottre Humphrey. Fresh life breathed back to the Bobcats and their loyal supporters. Even the sideline buzzed with renewed energy: "Scottre’s in for six!" could be heard from the announcers as cheers erupted.

Tommy Mellott wasn't done yet, though. After another setback by North Dakota put them heavily favored, Mellott showed his dual-threat capability. A swift 44-yard dash from him cut the deficit to just three points, with the score now resting at 28-25. This electrifying play came shortly after Mellott led his team on two fascinating drives, demonstrating perseverance and athleticism, revitalizing the spirit of the Bobcats fans.

The fourth quarter was nothing short of drama. The Bison’s lead fluctuated with every possession. When North Dakota pushed their lead to 35-25, it seemed like they might solidify their grip on the game. But as the clock ticked down, the tension intensified. Mellott was determined to spearhead yet another comeback.

His final effort was valiant, skillfully maneuvering through North Dakota's defensive blitz, but it wasn’t enough to idle Miller’s effectiveness. The final seconds passed with the scoreboard reading NDSU 35, MSU 32, after Mellott tried desperately to breach North Dakota’s last defense. Each yard was fought for—with each pass and each tackle sparking fervent excitement within the crowd.

Upon the conclusion of the championship, acknowledged as much for his excellent on-field performances as for his season overall, Tommy Mellott was honored with the Walter Payton Award, officially recognizing him as the best offensive player across the FCS this season. He made history as the first player from Montana State to earn this distinction, something no one would doubt as he took the field.

With the game concluded and no title for the Bobcats, reflections abound on both teams: North Dakota State reinforces their legacy, securing another championship, whereas Montana State shows promise with Mellott leading the charge. One thing is clear: the Bobcats' tenacity and talent create excitement around their future seasons.
