Moldova Stands Firm Against Russian Influence

Elections loom as Moldova seeks to affirm European ambitions amid Russian meddling

Recent electoral events and referendums have spotlighted Moldova as it grapples with significant external influences, particularly from Russia. Despite its size—less than half of Ireland—the country stands at the crossroads of European integration and potential Russian domination. During the presidential runoff on November 3, the stakes, as members of the US government warn, are high amid fears of foreign interference and manipulation.

Volatile political landscapes are nothing new for Moldova, which gained independence from the Soviet Union just over three decades ago. It has endured instability marked by economic struggles, significant emigration, and the contentious relationship with its politically separated regions—Transnistria and Gagauzia—both of which lean pro-Russian. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed concerns about Russian interference during the upcoming runoff election, particularly as the nation moves closer to European Union accession talks.

The situation escalated recently when President Maia Sandu accused her opponents of attempting to undermine democratic processes through fraudulent activities, including the buying of votes on unprecedented scales. She highlighted police warnings about Russian efforts to disrupt the electoral proceedings and stressed the need for vigilance to uphold Moldova’s sovereignty and democratic rights. Indeed, the United States has accused Russia of injecting millions of dollars with the intention of swaying election outcomes to favor pro-Russian candidates.

Moldova's recent EU accession referendum has also added layers to its political narrative. Voters narrowly concluded with more than 50% favoring the motion to align themselves more closely with the EU, indicating strong public support for European integration. Maia Sandu's administration positions itself wholeheartedly on this path, adopting pro-European policies since the election of Sandu over the Moscow-backed incumbent Igor Dodon back in 2020.

Looking back at history, the region has long felt the grip of Russian influence, which dates back to the late 1800s when parts of Moldova were incorporated under Russian control. The trauma from the Soviet era continues to echo through Moldovan politics. The Kremlin has used Transnistria, which declared independence from Moldova with Moscow's backing, and Gagauzia, whose local authorities have shown support for Russian policies, as tools to exert control and perpetuate political paralysis.

Now, with Moldova's aspirations aimed at EU integration, there lies the question of how to manage relations with Romania. Historically, Romania has been significant for Moldovans, with many seeking citizenship to enjoy greater freedom within the EU. A reciprocal citizenship policy between the two nations could strengthen Moldova’s European alignment. If successful, it would grant voting rights to millions of Moldovan-Romanians, potentially tipping the balance of power toward pro-European candidates during the next elections. This could be pivotal, especially against the backdrop of increased pro-Russian sentiments being fueled by Moscow's propaganda efforts.

Local and international observers remain wary when it emerges through the shadows of Moldovan politics, as the Kremlin has undeniably implemented disinformation campaigns and cyber activity to undermine Moldova’s governmental stability. The machinations are evident; they closely resemble those employed against its neighboring Ukraine before the full-scale invasion initiated last year.

The upcoming elections, alongside the backdrop of Moldova's recent referendums, showcase the collective will of the Moldovan people against the odds set forth by external influences. President Sandu’s administration embraces this momentum, heralding it as democracy’s preservation amid growing Russian aggression and internal threats to sovereignty.

What remains to be seen is whether Moldovans can reaffirm their right to choose their paths, fiercely advocating for EU integration or capitulating to external pressures as they navigate these crossroads. The stakes are incredibly high, and the world watches closely.
