Mohanlal’s Thudarum Dominates Box Office With Record Earnings

The film grossed Rs 13.50 crore in just two days, showcasing remarkable audience turnout and critical acclaim.

Mohanlal’s latest release ‘Thudarum’ is proving once again why he remains Malayalam cinema’s undisputed box office king. The film, directed by Tharun Moorthy, has grossed an impressive Rs 13.50 crore within just two days of its release, riding high on strong word-of-mouth and glowing reviews.

According to early estimates by the Sacnilk website, ‘Thudarum’ minted Rs 5.25 crore on its opening day and saw an excellent jump on its second day, earning Rs 8.25 crore. The Malayalam version accounted for the overwhelming majority of the collections, with a minor contribution from the Telugu version.

Audience occupancy has been stellar, with ‘Thudarum’ recording an overall Malayalam occupancy of 79.95% on its second day (April 26, 2025). Morning shows started strong with 65.04% occupancy, while afternoon, evening, and night shows soared to 86.36%, 83.51%, and 84.87%, respectively. The film has dominated key markets. In Kochi, occupancy rates touched a staggering 92.75%, while Trivandrum followed closely at 85.50%. Even in cities like Bengaluru and Chennai, where Malayalam films usually have a smaller audience, ‘Thudarum’ recorded solid numbers with 68.75% and 71% occupancy, respectively.

‘Thudarum’ stars Mohanlal in the lead, supported by Shobana, Maniyanpilla Raju, Binu Pappu, and Irshad Ali. ETimes review for the movie reads, “Jakes Bejoy’s music elevates the scenes, making a real impact in the storytelling. Shaji Kumar’s cinematography is excellent and it is perfectly coordinated with the edits by Shafeeque VB and Nishadh Yusuf. Their collective work lay the ground for the mood of the film. Tharun, whose last film Saudi Vellakka won a National Awards, could have done better to have created a more subtle story; this very much has an ‘80s-’90s feel. For Mohanlal fans, his raw magnetism might be exciting, but with its loud and overwritten scenes, the acting lacks nuance all around.”

The Malayalam crime drama 'Thudarum,' starring Mohanlal and Shobana, premiered in theatres on April 25, 2025. Helmed by director Tharun Moorthy and co-written with K. R. Sunil, the film features a talented ensemble cast including Farhaan Faasil, Maniyanpilla Raju, Binu Pappu, Irshad Ali, and Aarsha Chandini Baiju.

On its opening day (Friday), the film collected Rs 5.25 crore in India net, with the Malayalam version contributing Rs 5.24 crore and the Telugu version adding Rs 1 lakh. On Day 2 (Saturday), the film earned Rs 3.71 crore till 5 PM, bringing the total India net collection to Rs 8.96 crore. The film has shown promising numbers and continues to attract audiences over the weekend.

On its second day, April 26, 2025, ‘Thudarum’ maintained strong occupancy in Malayalam (2D) screenings across theaters. The film saw a healthy turnout in the morning shows with 65.04% occupancy, which further surged during the afternoon shows, reaching an impressive 86.36%. However, data for the evening and night shows is currently unavailable or yet to be reported. The strong afternoon numbers indicate sustained interest and positive word of mouth among audiences.

Mohanlal’s ‘Thudarum’ opened with a bang, earning Rs 16.65 crore worldwide on Day 1; poised for a blockbuster weekend and targeting the Rs 100 crore club within 10 days. Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s latest film, ‘Thudarum,’ released on April 25, has set the box office on fire. Directed by Tharun Moorthy and produced by M. Renjith, the crime thriller co-starring Shobana has taken an exceptional opening, surprising even the Kerala industry.

With zero promotions, ‘Thudarum’ clocked an impressive Rs 5.10 crore in Kerala alone on its opening day, and if we include other territories, along with the staggering USD 1.25 million (around Rs 10.65 crore) from the overseas markets, the collection stands at Rs 16.65 crores. Thanks to this phenomenal start, ‘Thudarum’ now stands fifth in the list of top worldwide Day 1 grossers from the Malayalam film industry. Interestingly, the top five are dominated by Mohanlal himself.

Leading the chart is Mohanlal’s blockbuster ‘Empuraan’ with a massive Rs 67 crore opening, followed by ‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’ at Rs 20.4 crore. Dulquer Salmaan’s ‘Kurup’ ranks third with Rs 19.2 crore, and Mohanlal’s fantasy drama ‘Odiyan’ takes the fourth spot with Rs 18.1 crore. ‘Thudarum’ rounds out the list at number five with Rs 16.65 crore.

With additional shows being added for Saturday and Sunday due to growing demand, ‘Thudarum’ is expected to post a terrific weekend, potentially taking its worldwide gross close to Rs 50 crore. At this pace, the film is also well on track to enter Mohanlal’s prestigious Rs 100 crore club within just 10 days, as per trade predictions.

As of April 26, 2025, ‘Thudarum’ is performing well at the cinema halls. On its opening day, April 25, 2025, ‘Thudarum’ collected ₹5.25 crore. The film saw a good growth on its second day, April 26, 2025, and collected close to ₹7.5 crore. On its second day, the film saw 65% and more occupancy for morning and afternoon shows, which rose to closer to 90% in the evening shows. It is proof that the film is set to do terrific business in its opening weekend.

‘Thudarum’ has already minted close to ₹13 crore at the box office in just two days of its release. While ‘L2: Empuraan’ collected a record-breaking ₹24.5 crore on its opening day before the occasion of Eid, ‘Thudarum’ minted ₹5.25 crore on its opening day, April 25, 2025. However, while the numbers slipped for ‘Empuraan’ to just ₹13 crore on day 2, ‘Thudarum’ witnessed a spectacular rise. This is close to a 43% hike in collections.

Director Tharun Moorthy’s ‘Thudarum’ is being compared to Mohanlal’s superhit and much-loved franchise film ‘Drishyam.’ The movie also stars Shobhana and Farhaan Faasil. The film's strong performance at the box office is a testament to Mohanlal's enduring popularity and the film's engaging storytelling, positioning it as a major contender in the Malayalam film industry.
