MODICA – Significant developments have unfolded recently, reflecting the vibrant community spirit of Modica. Notably, the restoration and reopening plans for the historic Church of Sant’Anna were announced, bringing hope and excitement to local parishioners.
Pastor Don Crescenzio Mucia shared the much-anticipated news at the Christmas Eve mass, confirming, "La chiesa riaprirà al culto dei fedeli nella seconda metà del 2025." The church, which has been closed since 2017 due to unsafe conditions caused by the collapse of its plasterwork, will undergo extensive repairs aided by funding secured through Deputy Ignazio Abbate's amendment to the financial legislation, totaling 330,000 euros.
This restoration is particularly significant for the faithful who have had to “emigrate” to smaller oratory spaces due to the closure, facing various inconveniences. The church has not received any conservation work since its construction in the 1960s, resulting in several areas needing urgent restoration. The reopening is eagerly awaited, with many community members expressing their longing for the church to resume its central role.
Meanwhile, the heartwarming story of Levi, a dog left without its owner, has been circulating on social media, tapping deeply at the community's compassion. Ariane Heeg Spadaro tragically passed away on December 19, following being struck by reversing heavy machinery outside a supermarket. Her beloved dog, Levi, who had been her constant companion, now needs a new home.
“Ma davvero è possibile che... una persona che possa prendersi cura di un cane?” one appeal for Levi's adoption declared, emphasizing the urgency and community responsibility surrounding the situation. The appeal highlighted Levi’s gentle nature, urging locals to step forward and offer him kindness and care.
On another note, Modica will welcome Sports Minister Andrea Abodi on December 28, for celebrations marking 40 years of the Scherma Modica, the local fencing club celebrated worldwide for producing Olympic medalist Giorgio Avola. Mayor Maria Monisteri touted the visit, stating, “Sarà un momento importante per la nostra Città,” which will include Minister Abodi touring the PalaScherma to inspect the progress of its renovations.
Later, Abodi will engage with mayors and administrators from the province of Ragusa during closed-door meetings at Palazzo San Domenico. This event not only honors the achievements of local fencing but also highlights the importance of sports promotion and the development of facilities for youth engagement.
Lastly, the cultural scene has been enriched by the recent election of Bruna Modica as the new president of the 'Amici della Musica' association. With excitement, she stated, "Assumo con emozione l’incarico" reflecting her commitment to continuing the legacy of the previous president, Rosario Monteleone, who led the group to achieve remarkable feats over 18 years.
Bruna aims to strengthen ties within the community and work on exciting future projects, stressing the importance of the association not just as a body of musicians but as a gathering of passionate individuals dedicated to fostering friendship and collaboration through music.
These recent developments signify how Modica is thriving, with community involvements crossing the realms of culture, sports, and compassion. It is evident from the church restoration plans to the heartfelt campaigns for Levi’s adoption, as well as the strategic moves by local organizations, the spirit of Modica continues to shine brightly, weaving the ties of its community even closer.
