MLB Free Agency Builds Anticipation For 2025 Season

Top players like Burnes and Alonso stir speculation as teams strategize moves.

The 2025 MLB free agency period is ramping up with ample speculation surrounding several high-profile players, reflecting the unpredictable nature of baseball’s offseason. One of the most significant shifts occurred when superstar Juan Soto signed with the New York Mets for what was, at the time, the largest contract in MLB history: 15 years and $765 million. His departure from the Yankees, who had their eyes set on him after his spectacular season, has left holes within the franchise and sparked attempts to secure other top talents this winter.

Now, teams such as the Toronto Blue Jays are scrambling to fill gaps and strengthen their lineup. Earlier this offseason, they experienced disappointment when Willy Adames, originally considered for their lineup, signed a hefty seven-year, $182 million contract with the San Francisco Giants. The loss was compounded when rumors surfaced about Corbin Burnes, the remaining ace newly available as he becomes one of the most sought-after free agents. The Blue Jays had initially hoped to enlist him as part of their rebuilding strategy.

Following the Winter Meetings, the competition for Burnes intensified as teams began to pursue him vigorously. Other interested parties include the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles, adding layers of complexity to negotiations. According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Blue Jays see Burnes as central to their strategy for 2025, especially after their somewhat disheartening 2024 season marked by finishing last within the AL East with a 74-88 record.

Burnes, who previously played for the Milwaukee Brewers and made his All-Star debut, boasts impressive statistics: he has achieved a career record of 60–36 with a 3.19 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 199 games. His reputation as one of the top pitchers left on the market, particularly after Max Fried signed with the New York Yankees, leaves teams clamoring for his services.

Adding to the narrative is the possibility of recruitment, as Adames, who recently joined the Giants, expressed intentions to persuade Burnes to join him on the West Coast. At the Giants press conference, Adames remarked, “I haven’t talked to him (Burnes), but I will definitely give him a call after today. Obviously, you know, you always want a guy like him … having a guy like him will be such an amazing addition.” The Blue Jays must be concerned about whether Adames’ friendly overtures will lure Burnes away.

Toronto’s immediate focus has shifted to recruiting other talents to solidify their prospects for the upcoming season. Players like Pete Alonso, also rumored to be on the move, are being discussed within the organizational strategy post-Soto. Alonso’s potential union with the Yankees, who have shown mutual interest, has significant industry buzz surrounding it. Yankees GM Brian Cashman mentioned Alonso’s impressive performance history with the Mets, emphasizing the need for high-quality players.

On other fronts, the Dodgers remain vigilant as they seek to bolster their roster, particularly focusing on young talent such as Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki. The Dodgers made it known during recent meetings, particularly through President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman, who has made signing Sasaki for the coming season “a major priority.” Since Sasaki is also experiencing growing interest from other teams, including the Braves and Padres, securing his commitment will be challenging.

The offseason turmoil isn’t just limited to free agency. Rumors of trades are also circulating as teams prepare for the 2025 season. The Chicago Cubs and the New York Yankees are reportedly clashing over players like Cody Bellinger, exploring conditional arrangements and financial negotiations to finalize trades. Cubs ownership has shown willingness to move Bellinger, who is coming off mixed performances and financial obligations.

Not surprisingly, several players slated for free agency have much riding on the 2025 season. The annual speculation leads to considerable interest from fans and analysts, especially since walk-year players appear ready to capitalize on the limelight. Bo Bichette is under scrutiny after battling injuries and slumping to underwhelming numbers during the previous season. Often considered another potential free agent, Bichette is determined to reclaim his form as he looks to secure financial stability after the season.

Similarly, Corbin Burnes remains the central focus of several teams. The uncertainty surrounding teams like the Yankees and Red Sox, who have kept their options open for pitching, keeps anticipation levels high. With free agency already swaying the league’s balance, it’s clear teams are preparing for dramatic shifts before the 2025 season kicks off.

The business of baseball continues to evolve quickly as teams navigate the pressures of free agency, operational transactions, and the continued emergence of potential blockbuster signings. With the offseason underway and the player market functioning at full capacity, one thing is clear: the 2025 MLB free agency promises to be one to watch as teams scramble for the best assets available.

With each signing and rumor, the direction of franchises might hinge on how well they can leverage available talent. It will be interesting to see how these moves play out, not only for winning seasons but for shaping the ever-changing fabric of Major League Baseball.
