Mizzou Hires Kellie Harper As Women’s Basketball Coach

Bringing experience and a winning attitude, Harper aims to revitalize the Tigers' basketball program.

On March 18, 2025, the University of Missouri hired Kellie Harper as the new head coach of its women's basketball team, marking a significant leadership shift for the program.

Athletic Director Laird Veatch made the announcement that Harper would become the fifth coach in Mizzou women's basketball history. With over 20 seasons as a head coach, including notable tenures at Tennessee and Missouri State, Harper brings a robust resume to the position.

"Kellie is a proven winner and dynamic leader who understands the ‘Will to Win’ necessary to succeed at the sport’s highest level,” Veatch stated in a release. Harper, who is 47 years old, has made the NCAA Tournament nine times throughout her coaching career and led her teams to four conference tournament championships.

Before her five years in Tennessee, where she coached from 2019 to 2024, Harper had a fruitful stint at Missouri State. From 2013 to 2019, she guided the Bears to multiple successful seasons, including a Sweet 16 appearance in the 2018-2019 NCAA Tournament. That season began with a rocky 1-7 start but concluded with a commendable 20-9 record.

"I am incredibly honored to be the next head coach at Mizzou," Harper expressed during her introductory remarks. "Missouri is a special place, and I know firsthand the passion and pride that surrounds this program." This personal sentiment underscores her return to familiar ground, as Harper began her coaching career in the state and has significant ties to Missouri.

Prior to her time at Missouri State, she served as head coach at North Carolina State and Western Carolina, compiling an impressive overall coaching record of 393 wins against 260 losses. At Tennessee, Harper went 108-52, which included leading her team to NCAA tournament appearances in each of her four complete seasons as their head coach.

Interestingly, this hiring follows the Tigers' parting with longtime coach Robin Pingeton, who spent 15 years at the helm of the women’s program, making four NCAA Tournament appearances during her tenure. Harper’s appointment is seen as a fresh start for a program that has struggled recently, finishing the last season with a 14-18 record and placing No. 13 in their conference standings.

Reflecting on the challenges ahead, Harper remarked, "I look forward to working with our leadership and our student-athletes, building strong relationships throughout the community and winning championships in Columbia. The foundation is in place for success—and I can't wait to get started." This statement resonates with the goals set forth by the university's athletic department as they aim to revitalize the program's competitive edge in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Notably, Harper’s coaching philosophy revolves around building meaningful connections with her players and integrating teamwork to achieve success on the court. Her experiences in the highly competitive SEC, including her time at Tennessee, equip her with the knowledge and insight necessary to uplift the Mizzou program.

As Mizzou prepares for the upcoming season, Harper's proven track record and energetic coaching style offer a sense of optimism and fresh possibilities. Fans are hopeful that her leadership will bring renewed success and a stronger presence in both the NCAA Tournament and SEC standings.

The Tigers boast a historical framework, having previously achieved milestones in women's basketball. However, the past few years have seen an evident decline, with the team failing to reach the postseason since their last NCAA Tournament appearance in 2019, a promising season where they managed to claim a No. 7 seed.

While the immediate future poses its challenges, Kellie Harper's arrival at Mizzou signals a turnaround for women's basketball at the university. The athletic community and fans alike are eager to witness how her innovative strategies and enthusiastic approach will reshape the team's dynamics and lead them back to prominence within collegiate basketball.
