Miyama Hirosi Returns To Kohaku Uta Gassen With Kendama Challenge

On his tenth consecutive appearance, the popular enka singer aims for Guinness World Record redemption as he serenades audiences.

Miyama Hirosi is set to make his mark once again on the stage of the 75th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen, which will be broadcast on New Year's Eve. Known for his captivating performances, Hirosi will not only enthrall audiences with his singing but is also gearing up for another kendama challenge aimed at breaking the Guinness World Record.

This year marks Hirosi's tenth consecutive appearance on the prestigious annual music event, which has become synonymous with Japan's New Year celebrations. He expressed his excitement about reaching this milestone, stating, “This is my tenth consecutive appearance. While I'm happy about reaching double digits, I want to deliver my performance well to close the year.” Hirosi has been participating since 2015, consistently captivating viewers with his unique integration of traditional elements.

During the rehearsal on December 29 at NHK Hall in Shibuya, he confirmed he would be performing the song “Koi... Jounen.” The song aligns with this year’s theme, “A Song for You,” which aims to echo the sentiments of joy and resilience felt across Japan during the past year.

For the past several years, Hirosi has also introduced his kendama skills to the show, which has added another layer to his performances. Last year, he collaborated with 128 participants to attempt to break the world record for the longest line of consecutive kendama catches. Although their initial success was retracted due to errors, Hirosi has chosen to embrace the opportunity for redemption as he prepares for this year's performance. "Last year we could not renew the Guinness record, but this year, I want us to accomplish it and welcome 2025 with it,” he affirmed.

Joining Hirosi on stage this year are several popular guest artists, including TAEHYUN from TOMORROW X TOGETHER, DJ KOO from TRF, and other rising talents like Shin Hamareon, Sota Hanamura, and RAN from ME:I. This diverse ensemble reflects the Kohaku Uta Gassen's commitment to showcasing the breadth of contemporary Japanese music.

Reflecting on his experiences over the last decade, Hirosi noted, “I want to give everyone the best song due to the various feelings we have this year.” His sentiments resonate deeply, especially with the hardships many have faced due to natural disasters and societal challenges throughout the year. The Kohaku Uta Gassen provides not just entertainment, but also serves as a cultural touchstone, bringing together people through the power of music.

Over the years, Hirosi has cultivated significant kendama skills, even obtaining the rank of 4th dan. His passion for this traditional Japanese skill has also infused his music with authenticity and zest. He emphasized the value of preparation and connection with fellow performers, discussing how he collaborates closely with other kendama enthusiasts to heighten their collective performance. “I want to gather everyone and share our enthusiasm and strength,” he explained, underscoring the camaraderie shared among performers.

Hiroshi's tenacity reflects both his personal character and the spirit of the event itself—resilience and hope interwoven with traditional and contemporary Japanese culture. This year's event promises to be no different, uniting artists and audiences alike as they bask under the spotlight of entertainment and cultural significance.

Looking forward, Hirosi expressed his aspirations, hoping his 10th performance will set the standard for future participations. He stated his desire to not just break records but also create unforgettable memories for his audience. With every note sung and every kendama catch, he aims to inspire all who tune in.

With Miyama Hirosi leading the charge, viewers can expect another unforgettable night of music, emotion, and celebration during the NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen. Tune in on December 31st to witness this remarkable blend of talent, tradition, and the sheer joy of the performance.
