Mirra Andreeva Claims Historic Victory At Indian Wells

The young Russian tennis star shocks the world by defeating Aryna Sabolenko to win her second consecutive WTA 1000 title.

Indian Wells witnessed the emergence of 17-year-old Russian tennis prodigy Mirra Andreeva, who made headlines by defeating the world number one, Aryna Sabolenko from Belarus, with scores of 2:6, 6:4, 6:3 on March 17, 2025. This remarkable victory at the WTA 1000 tournament not only marked Andreevas first triumph over Sabolenko, but it also made her the youngest champion of the event since Serena Williams achieved the same feat back in 1999.

Andreeva's remarkable performance throughout the tournament saw her defeating several top-tier players, including Iga Swiatek, the world number two, and multiple other contenders. With this win, Andreeva secured her second consecutive WTA 1000 title, having also won the Dubai tournament earlier this season, and elevated her to sixth place in the WTA rankings, making her the first Russian female player to reach the top six since February 2016.

Mirra Andreeva took to social media to express her joy, saying, "...I ran like a rabbit because Aryna sent very heavy balls, and it was difficult for me to react to them. I want to thank myself." Her reflection on the match highlighted the physical demands placed upon her during the encounter, where she exhibited great resilience after losing the first set.

Evgeny Kafelnikov, the two-time Grand Slam champion, commented on Andreeva's victory, calling it "a big triumph," and emphasized how her physical condition has improved dramatically. He remarked, "I see she has noticeably gained strength physically compared to even six months ago. I understand young bodies grow and mature, and this is something we all have to appreciate."

This victory also means more than just another title; it cements Andreeva's place as one of the most exciting talents on the women's circuit. Former champion Maria Sharapova congratulated her, expressing pride and admiration for her performance, stating, "Mirra, congratulations! So confident. So deserved."

On the path to her victory, Andreeva showcased her prowess by overcoming her previous defeats against Sabolenko earlier this year at both the Brisbane International and the Australian Open. The final match against Sabolenko lasted over two hours, where Andreeva made six aces but also had to navigate through two double faults. Despite intense pressure, she converted four out of twelve break points and recovered from her initial setbacks to secure the win.

With this win, Andreeva became only the third player in the Open Era to defeat both the world number one and number two players at the same tournament before reaching the age of 18, following the footsteps of legends Tracy Austin and Serena Williams.

Meanwhile, 23-year-old Jack Draper from Britain also made headlines at the same tournament, clinching his first ATP Masters 1000 title by defeating Holger Rune of Denmark with convincing scores of 6:2, 6:2. Draper's match reflected his return to form after facing injury struggles over the previous seasons.

Draper expressed his elation post-match, stating, "All the labor of recent years is finally bringing fruits. Its an incredible feeling," highlighting the perseverance he showed by returning to the top ranks after struggling with shoulder and hamstring injuries.

This tournament has been noteworthy not only for the up-and-coming stars like Andreeva and Draper finding success but also for the level of competition showcased. Andreeva's victory along with Draper's win signals new chapters for both players and sets the scene for what lies ahead this season.
