Minnesota Wild Fall To Utah Hockey Club 4-0 As Stars Return

Kirill Kaprizov and Jared Spurgeon make comebacks, but Wild struggle against strong Utah defense.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The atmosphere was electric on January 23, 2025, as the Minnesota Wild squared off against the Utah Hockey Club at the Xcel Energy Center. Both teams came to the rink with significant stakes as the Wild looked to bolster their lineup with the return of star forward Kirill Kaprizov and captain Jared Spurgeon after lengthy absences due to injuries.

Kaprizov had been sidelined since December 23 following a lower-body injury, missing 12 games. Before his injury, he was among the NHL leaders with 23 goals and 27 assists. His absence was felt by the Wild as they struggled with consistency, winning only one of their last five games leading up to this matchup. Head Coach John Hynes expressed relief when he confirmed both Kaprizov and Spurgeon would feature against Utah.

“They had a long road to get back and put in a lot of hard work, so it’s nice they’re getting the opportunity to play,” Hynes remarked after the morning skate.

Spurgeon, who had missed nine games due to aggravations related to his ankle and knee injuries, echoed similar sentiments, describing the frustration of being sidelined.

The Wild entered this game with a record of 28-15-4 and were currently sitting fourth in the Western Conference standings. Meanwhile, the Utah Hockey Club, with their record of 20-19-7, was fifth and eager to gain ground on the playoff wild card as they approached the midway point of the season.

“We anticipate this stretch to be intense; we’re up against teams with high points,” said Cole Bagley, commenting on Utah's challenging schedule as they aimed to overcome their recent hurdle. Steinberg highlighted the challenge the Wild presented.

After the puck dropped, Utah quickly made their presence felt. Barrett Hayton scored early, giving Utah the lead just moments after the game started. Hayton continued his scoring streak, tallying two goals and four assists across four games leading up to the matchup.

With time winding down, Clayton Keller netted another goal, extending Utah's lead to 2-0. “He might be the best player no one around the country knows yet,” remarked commentator Steve Levy, praising Keller's significant contributions to the team this season.

Flashbacks of the history between these two teams were fresh on the minds of everyone. Just under two months prior, the two teams faced off twice, with Minnesota winning one game during a shootout and Utah clinching victory at home. This led both teams to approach the game with nerves and expectations.

The first period of play continued to favor Utah, as they limited the Wild's opportunities. “One-way traffic for the Utah Hockey Club,” Bagley noted. “They suffocated the Wild for nearly the entire 20 minutes.” Despite Minnesota attempting to fight back, they couldn’t find their stride.

Throughout the second period, the Utah defense held strong against Minnesota's attempts, rebuffing several shots on goal. Lawson Crouse redirected another shot at the net, pushing Utah's lead to 3-0. The Wild struggled to capitalize on momentary power-play chances, missing opportunities to break through Utah's defensive lines.

Despite the pressure from Minnesota, who had outshot Utah but struggled to get quality shots past Karel Vejmelka, Utah remained composed and continued to dictate the game’s tempo.

Utah's goaltender, Vejmelka, was instrumental, boasting significant stats entering the matchup with 10 wins and solid averages against the Wild. His performance played a pivotal role and was noted by fans who had come to see if Minnesota's returnees would turn the tide. “He’s always been up for the challenge against Minnesota,” Bagley noted about Vejmelka.

A late goal from Barrett Hayton sealed the Night, ending the game with Utah overpowering Minnesota 4-0. The Wild were unable to find their rhythm and will have to regroup as they continue through their season, vying for playoff positioning.

The Wild's ability to integrate Kaprizov and Spurgeon back onto the ice will be pivotal moving forward, as their performance against Utah demonstrated the effort needed to bounce back. Coach Hynes spoke about their need to acclimatize quickly.

“They need to be smart, manage their energy, and get back to game conditions quickly,” Hynes said, hinting at the mental and physical adjustments necessary.

Looking forward, both teams will have to recalibrate as they prepare for their next contests. With the intensity of the league this season increasing, each game means more as teams seek to secure their spots come playoff season.

“We know there are plenty of challenges to come, but we need to be ready,” Kaprizov said amid the discussion on the challenges of returning to competitive play.

The next matchup for the Wild will push them to adapt quickly, hoping to utilize their lineup's full potential to regain the competitive momentum they had earlier. For Utah, the victory will be sweet as they continue on their season, motivated by consistency and strategic play.
