Mindy Kaling's 'Running Point' Revolutionizes Sports Comedy

Kate Hudson shines as Isla Gordon, breaking barriers and family ties on Netflix's new series.

Netflix's latest offering, Running Point, brings together the talents of Kate Hudson and Mindy Kaling in the world of professional basketball, creating a series that's as much about family dynamics as it is about hoops.

Jay Ellis, known for his standout role on First Wives Club, co-stars alongside Hudson as the young coach of the fictional Los Angeles Waves, echoing elements of the real-life LA Lakers. The series, described as intriguing by viewers and critics alike, is steeped not only in basketball but also family dramas and romantic tensions, all juxtaposed within the competitive atmosphere of sports.

Before making it big, Ellis played basketball during his college years at Concordia University, where he honed his skills on the court. Now, he finds himself once again entwined with basketball, balancing comedy with drama as he guides young players through the pressures of their professional lives.

The ensemble cast also includes Justin Theroux, who plays Cam, Isla’s elder brother, who steps down from his position, paving the way for his sister to take the helm. This shift sparks tensions within the family as they navigate their tumultuous relationships and the challenges faced by Isla, who must prove herself as the head of the franchise.

Mindy Kaling, the series’ writer and executive producer, intertwines her own love for basketball with themes of female empowerment and the struggles women face within typically male-dominated industries. She shared insights, explaining how her father’s passion for the Boston Celtics during her childhood influenced her own enthusiasm for the sport. "When my dad emigrated here, he fell really hard for basketball, and I think it shaped my childhood," Kaling revealed.

Isla Gordon, Hudson's character, starts her new role as team president with aspirations to modernize the organization, inspire its players, and firmly establish her place as the leader. Throughout her struggles, there's also light-hearted comedy infused through interactions with her family and the team. Kaling expressed her intent to explore the dynamics of family amid the comedic backdrop, noting, "It was my first time writing characters where romance isn't the main focus, and discovering various kinds of relationships was refreshing for me."

While Running Point aims to bring comedy and heartfelt moments to the audience, critics liken its atmosphere to Ted Lasso with hints of Succession. Although initial reviews show some apprehension concerning the character depth, particularly with the male figures overshadowing Isla’s narrative, there’s still appreciation for the blend of sports and humor. Critics celebrated the moments where the family’s privilege clashes with their dysfunction, deeming it timely and relevant as it speaks to how sports reflect society.

Kaling describes the show as "super sexy" attributing its playful content to her intention of making it enjoyable for viewers. "I follow the characters on their determination to prove themselves; their lives hold interest far beyond just romance," she explained.

Notably, the chemistry between Hudson and Ellis shines as they confront their characters’ ambitions and dreams. Critics appreciated how the supposed rivalry could hint at potential romantic developments, yet without losing focus on the broader narrative of sibling rivalry and familial legacy linked to their basketball team.

Hudson, who embraces the comedic dynamic of her character, stated, "I love the challenge of stepping out from traditional romantic roles; it’s exciting to push the boundaries of characterization." Both Kaling and Hudson echoed the sentiment of producing television that's reflective of contemporary issues, signaling the show stands as both entertaining and thought-provoking.

Streaming now on Netflix, Running Point offers ten episodes filled with laughs, emotional moments, and deep-rooted family ties throughout the high-stakes backdrop of professional basketball.
