Milan Falls To Bologna Despite Giménez's Assist

A tough defeat for the Rossoneri as defensive errors cost them valuable points

AC Milan faced a disappointing defeat against Bologna, losing 2-1 during their Serie A match at the Estadio Renato Dall'Ara on February 25, 2025. This match marked another tough encounter for the Rossoneri as their defensive shortcomings were prominently displayed, allowing Bologna to mount a comeback.

The match started off rather uneventfully, with both teams struggling to create clear scoring opportunities. It wasn't until near the end of the first half, at the 43-minute mark, when Santiago Giménez showcased his skills. A long goal kick from Milan's goalkeeper, Mike Maignan, found Giménez, who skillfully elevated above the Bologna defender. He made excellent use of his positioning and technique to flick the ball to his teammate Rafael Leão. Leão, trailing behind without defensive pressure, capitalized on the opportunity, scoring the opener for Milan, making it 1-0 just before halftime.

"Giménez assisted Leão, who ran free to score, putting Milan up 1-0," reported one football analyst, exemplifying the potential impact of the young Mexican forward.

Unfortunately for Milan, the joy of the goal was short-lived. The second half began with Bologna coming out aggressively and quickly equalizing through Santiago Castro just three minutes after play resumed, at the 48-minute mark. Milan’s defense failed to mark effectively, allowing Castro to slot the ball past Maignan.

Despite Milan's efforts to regain control, Bologna turned the tide completely at the 82-minute mark when Dan Ndoye found the net, clinching the match 2-1. This goal came after another lapse in Milan's defensive concentration, with the defense having been caught off guard on set pieces leading to both of Bologna's goals.

The final whistle marked another harrowing defeat for Milan, stalling their pursuit for points necessary for European football qualification next season. Now, with only 41 points, they sit eighth in the Serie A standings, trailing Bologna, who climbed to sixth with 44 points.

After the match, Giménez’s performance was critiqued, as he had few clear opportunities to score himself, managing only one shot on goal early in the game which was off target. Although he achieved the assist, the pressure to perform consistently as part of Milan’s attacking strategy is mounting on the young forward. "A terrible result! Milan slips away from European spots after this defeat," another source remarked, reiterative of the shared sentiment among fans and analysts alike.

Giménez has now played seven matches for Milan, netting three goals and providing two assists. This contribution reflects his growing influence within the squad, showcasing potential for future fixtures. Meanwhile, Leão, with his goal, continued to build on his impressive campaign, securing his tenth goal of the season.

The disappointment felt by the team is palpable as they aim to adjust their gameplay, address defensive frailties, and get their season back on track. The focus shifts to their next match, as the coaching staff looks to solidify the team's defensive structure and maximize the attacking potential of players like Giménez and Leão.

For now, Milan will need to regroup and reflect on this match as they prepare for upcoming challenges, hoping to refine their approach moving forward and reclaim their spot among the top teams vying for European competition.
