Mikkel Hansen Opens Up About Health Crisis

The former handball star shares his struggles with stress and depression during his career

Mikkel Hansen, one of Denmark's greatest handball players, has recently come forward about his struggles with stress and depression, challenges he faced even amid the triumphs of his illustrious career. The 37-year-old athlete, who concluded his professional tenure with gold at the summer Olympics in Paris, opened up about these personal battles through the new DR documentary, 'Mikkel Hansen.'

Hansen's story begins with the peak of his success; after lifting the 2023 World Cup trophy with the Danish national team, he woke up one morning on his hotel bed, lost and confused about his surroundings. “There was no joy in anything, everything felt gray and indifferent. At last, it was just... I was done,” he recalls, illustrating the severe emotional turmoil he underwent.

The former handball star had already faced substantial health issues following blood clots diagnosed earlier. After returning to his roots at Aalborg Handball, he found himself bogged down by the pressures of shifting back and forth between his life in Copenhagen and his commitment to the sport. The intense travel, coupled with the weight of expectations from fans and sponsors, took a toll on his mental health.

Encouraged by his wife, Stephanie Gundelach, Hansens made the tough decision to step away from handball temporarily after recognizing the extent of his deteriorated mental state. “I felt never adequate, no matter where I was. Everything collapsed,” he explained, describing the sensation of being overwhelmed.

His wife spoke candidly about their turning point, recalling the day she answered her husband's frantic call. Mikkel, disoriented and hyperventilated, desperately wanted assistance. “He was completely out of it. He had just woken from a nap, and he didn’t know where he was,” recalled Gundelach, expressing her fear for his wellbeing. After being informed of his distressing thoughts and emotional struggles, she swiftly contacted his agent to initiate his sick leave. “It was necessary; he needed to come home,” she affirmed.

Hansen acknowledges the quick action taken by Stephanie was pivotal: “I am really glad she made the decision. I wouldn’t have been able to do it myself. I think I would have ended up somewhere much worse,” he stated emphatically. The relief of stepping away from the sport allowed him to focus on what truly matters, finding joy again through simple family moments.

His time during the illness was marked by introspection and family bonding, leading Mikkel to understand his priorities. “Getting my children to laugh and being with Stephanie gave me my strength back,” he shared, signifying the importance of mental wellness and support systems.

Following his recovery, Hansen made his return to the court with Aalborg, leading to remarkable moments, including securing the Denmark team’s hefty victories and another Olympic medal. His comeback was not only triumphant but also inspiring; he hopes his vulnerability can be the gateway for others to speak openly about their struggles.

The tale of Mikkel Hansen transcends mere sports achievement; it resonates as a powerful reminder of the silent battles faced by many high-profile athletes. Although celebrated for his accomplishments, Hansen's candid acknowledgment of mental health challenges adds depth to his legacy.

Hansen, once caught between the pressures of elite performance and personal health, has emerged hopeful, wishing to aid others suffering similar tribulations. He urges transparency about mental health issues, championing the message: it’s okay to seek help and take the necessary time to heal.

His overall narrative serves to obliterate the stigmas surrounding mental health, particularly within competitive sports. Athletes like Mikkel Hansen exemplify resilience not only through physical prowess but through emotional bravery, showcasing the strength found in vulnerability.

Today, Hansen embraces the future, optimistic about the messages he can convey through his experiences. With support from family, friends, and teammates, he aims to continue advocating for mental health awareness, providing hope to others experiencing their own dark seasons.

The documentary “Mikkel Hansen” is currently available to stream, detailing his incredibly human story and encouraging discussions around mental health transition from silent suffering to vocal support.
