Mike Peters Of The Alarm Dies At 66 After Cancer Battle

The iconic rock frontman inspired many through his music and cancer advocacy efforts.

Mike Peters, lead singer of the longstanding Welsh rock band The Alarm, died Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at age 66 after a decades-long battle with blood cancer. His passing was confirmed by the band’s social media accounts.

Peters was first diagnosed with lymphoma in 1995 and later chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Last year, his health took a turn for the worse, forcing The Alarm to cancel a US tour as his CLL transformed into a high-grade lymphoma known as Richter’s Syndrome. A press release from Peters’ publicist states, “Last April, just before embarking on a 50-date US tour, he was diagnosed with Richter’s Syndrome, an aggressive form of lymphoma, and despite extensive treatment at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, including a clinical trial and innovative CAR-T therapy, doctors were unable to prevent the cancer progressing.”

The Alarm formed in 1981, emerging from the punk scene with a sound that combined anthemic rock with socially conscious lyrics. The band, which included guitarist Dave Sharp, bassist Eddie McDonald, and drummer Nigel Twist, released their debut album, Declaration, in 1984. It featured their signature song, “Sixty Eight Guns,” which became a defining anthem of the 1980s. The band achieved significant success, touring with major acts like U2 and Bob Dylan, and they became known for their energetic live performances.

Despite a successful career, The Alarm disbanded in 1991. Peters, however, continued to create music and eventually reformed the band in the 21st century under the name The Alarm MM++. The group released several albums, including their latest, Transformation, which is scheduled for release on June 6, 2025. Just before his death, Peters shared his excitement for the new album, showcasing his enduring passion for music.

Throughout his life, Peters was not only known for his music but also for his resilience in the face of cancer. His battle with the disease was a significant part of his public persona. He co-founded the Love Hope Strength Foundation with his wife, Jules Jones Peters, who herself has faced breast cancer. Together, they aimed to raise awareness and funds for cancer research, particularly focusing on recruiting bone marrow donors at live music events.

Peters’ commitment to cancer awareness extended beyond fundraising; he led several mountain-climbing expeditions to promote health and wellness, including treks to the Himalayas and Mount Kilimanjaro. In 2017, he initiated the “Big Busk,” a walk between cancer wards in hospitals in northern Wales, culminating at the summit of Snowdon. His efforts helped recruit thousands of potential bone marrow donors, significantly impacting the lives of many cancer patients.

In a 2018 interview with Guitar World, Peters reflected on his journey, stating, “Stay alive and appreciate every second you’ve got. Live right up to the last breath and stay positive about the world, your family and the environment you live in.” His words resonated deeply with fans and those who followed his story, serving as a testament to his optimistic outlook despite the challenges he faced.

As news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from fans and fellow musicians alike. The Alarm shared a heartfelt message on social media, posting the song “Totally Free” alongside a tribute video and the music video for “Sixty Eight Guns.” Peters is survived by his wife, Jules, and their two sons, Dylan and Evan.

Mike Peters’ legacy is one of hope, resilience, and the power of music to inspire change. His contributions to both the music industry and cancer awareness will not be forgotten, as he leaves behind a rich history of artistic achievement and humanitarian efforts.

In a world often overshadowed by negativity, Peters stood out as a beacon of positivity, using his platform to uplift others and spread awareness about the fight against cancer. His story is a reminder of the importance of living fully and passionately, even in the face of adversity.
