Michigan Wolverines Win Big Ten Championship

Wolverines capture the tournament title for the first time since 2018 after defeating Wisconsin 59-53.

MICHIGAN, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men’s basketball team has finally captured the Big Ten tournament title, celebrating their first championship victory since 2018 after defeating the Wisconsin Badgers 59-53 on March 16, 2025, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The Wolverines showcased their prowess throughout the tournament, with key performances from standout players.

During the championship match, Michigan was relentless, holding on against the Badgers to clinch their title. Tre Donaldson was pivotal, having propelled the Wolverines to the finals with his dramatic buzzer-beater against Maryland, which resulted in an 81-80 semifinal victory. Donaldson finished the game with 12 points and set up his teammates effectively, contributing a career-high nine assists.

Vladislav Goldin and Danny Wolf both had phenomenal outings during the tournament as well. Goldin posted 25 points and added 10 rebounds during the semifinal against Maryland and was instrumental in the championship match. Wolf complemented his performance by scoring 21 points and recording 14 rebounds against Maryland, marking his 15th double-double of the season. Together, they have been key to Michigan’s success, particularly during the heated matches leading up to the title game.

The road to the championship began on March 14 with Michigan facing off against Purdue, where they asserted their dominance with an 86-68 victory. Wolf was the leader of the pack, scoring 19 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and dishing out six assists. Goldin added significantly with 15 points and eight rebounds, and Donaldson contributed 13 points and five assists, showcasing their offensive depth.

Michigan's consistent teamwork and effective communication on the court have been highlighted throughout this tournament run. The Wolverines had 25 assists during the quarterfinal against Purdue, illustrating their collaborative offense. They had fulfilled what many had hoped - to not only make it to the championship but to win it.

"A coast-to-coast, buzzer-beater layup by Tre Donaldson lifted the Maize and Blue to an 81-80 semifinal victory over No. 11-ranked and second seed Maryland," remarked Michigan Athletics. This thrilling victory set the tone for the championship against Wisconsin.

With 5.3 seconds remaining against Maryland, and trailing 80-79, Donaldson took pace. He quickly inbounded the basketball to Goldin, who fed it back to him. Sprinting down the court, Donaldson made a left-handed layup off the glass just 0.4 seconds before the final buzzer, sealing the win. This game-winning moment solidified Donaldson’s reputation as one of the clutch players of the tournament.

Michigan's defense also played a pivotal role throughout the tournament. Their rebounding was another standout aspect, particularly against Maryland, where Michigan out-rebounded the Terrapins 47-18. Their ability to convert turnovers to points was also effective; they secured numerous fast breaks, causing chaos for their opponents. Especially notable was Maryland's dependency on free throws, which they relied on heavily to maintain leads.

Wisconsin, the number five seed, was likewise no easy opponent. They fought hard to reach the championship game, showcasing their merits by defeating teams along the way. Having previously lost to Michigan earlier this season (67-64 on December 3, 2024), the Badgers entered the matchup poised to avenge this defeat. Wisconsin was expected to be favored by 3 1/2 points leading up to the final showdown, but Michigan's performance continued to defy those expectations.

Michigan’s victory leaves them with flashbacks of their glory days as they add another trophy to their collection of Big Ten tournament championships, previously won in 1998, 2017, and 2018. This triumph now places them alongside Michigan State as the most successful teams to compete for the title, echoing their deep-rooted history within NCAA basketball.

This exciting tournament run has not only bolstered the players' profiles but also reinvigorated the school’s basketball program, giving Michigan brimming confidence heading forward as they venture toward potential NCAA tournament play.

Goldin’s performance during the season has secured him places on the All-Big Ten rosters, attaining All-Big Ten first-team recognition by media and second-team positioning by coaches. Wolf too was regarded highly, earning spots on both the first and second teams, signifying the impact they’ve had on their team's progression.

To celebrate Michigan’s successful campaign, USA TODAY has released commemorative posters featuring the words “CHAMPIONS!” prominently displayed alongside photos of Goldin, selling for $15.25. Dunk contests and trophy celebrations were witnessed as the Wolverines cut down the nets, marking the end of their exhilarating tournament run.

With memories of this year’s triumph, Michigan aims to continue building upon this success as they look forward to what lies next. March Madness is right around the corner, and the Wolverines are on the cusp of making waves.
