Michigan Wolverines Down USC Trojans 85-74

Danny Wolf leads the way for the Wolverines in key Big Ten triumph.

LOS ANGELES — The Michigan Wolverines began 2025 with purpose, defeating the USC Trojans 85-74 on Saturday evening. This victory marked Michigan's first conference game against USC since the Trojans joined the Big Ten this season.

With the win, Michigan improved to 11-3 overall and 3-0 within the conference. Danny Wolf was the standout performer for the Wolverines, scoring 21 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, and providing seven assists. His exceptional performance solidified his position as one of the stars of the game, showcasing his versatility.

Michigan quickly set the tone for the matchup, starting with red-hot shooting from three-point range. The Wolverines drained their first five attempts, building an early lead as Tre Donaldson and Nimari Burnett sank long-range shots. They finished the opening half shooting 10-of-16 from beyond the arc, with Wolf conducting the offense effectively.

"It's hard to come up with adjectives to describe Danny Wolf. He's an NBA player in college basketball and Michigan is fortunate to have him," commented one fan.

Despite showing such promise, the game turned competitive fast. The Trojans responded with their own runs, keeping the score close. By halftime, Michigan held a narrow lead at 42-38.

The second half started off similarly for Michigan, as the Wolverines launched on a 13-2 run, putting them up 55-40, thanks to continuous efforts from Wolf and Vlad Goldin. They showcased their size and skill, utilizing the height advantage effectively against USC's smaller squad.

But as the game progressed, USC dug deep, turning the tide and even taking the lead with just over seven minutes left. Persistent effort allowed USC to claw back, momentarily putting Michigan’s defense on notice.

With just under four minutes to play, trailing briefly, Michigan clamped down defensively and executed offensively to regain control. A 10-0 run, sparked by smart plays from Wolf and clutch free throws from Goldin, allowed the Wolverines to create space between them and the Trojans.

Despite being challenged fiercely throughout the game, Michigan's combination of shooting and size was key to their victory.

Other highlights from Michigan included 16 points each from Tre Donaldson and Nimari Burnett, and another 12 points from Roddy Gayle Jr. Despite being challenged by the Trojans physically, Michigan stood firm.

"Michigan has to win games like this to win the Big Ten. This should be a huge confidence-builder," noted one analyst.

USC’s efforts were led by Desmond Claude and Wesley Yates III, who each dropped 19 points. Despite being undermanned because of injuries — including key player Terrance Williams II — USC battled hard but could not keep up with Michigan's depth.

This victory was also significant due to the emotional aspect, as many Wolverines fans traveled from Michigan, creating a supportive environment at the Galen Center. The atmosphere felt somewhat like home for the visiting team, filled with cheers and chants against the home crowd.

Michigan’s shooting could have been more consistent as they struggled from three-point range later on, going 0-for-8 from deep during the second half. Nevertheless, they compensated by pushing the ball inside effectively, eventually amassing 32 points within the paint after the break.

The importance of this win was clear, as Michigan eyes potential NCAA Tournament opportunities. With their next game set against UCLA, maintaining this momentum will be pivotal.

The date for the upcoming matchup against the No. 15 Bruins at Pauley Pavilion is set for January 7, at 10 p.m. EST, streaming live on Peacock.
