Michael Vick Takes Charge As Norfolk State Football Coach

Vick's return home fuels hope for the Spartans' revival and community impact.

Norfolk State University made headlines recently with the announcement of Michael Vick as its new head football coach, embracing one of its most famous natives to lead the program. Vick, whose storied career and tumultuous past are widely known, was formally introduced during an emotional press conference on Monday morning.

"God has blessed me to do some amazing things in my life ... but this is where I want to be," Vick reflected as he expressed his deep-rooted connection to the community and the university. The 44-year-old former NFL star shared his vision for transforming the football program, stating, "We’re going to make the most out of this."

Vick’s appointment marks the beginning of what many hope will be a new era for Norfolk State, which has not seen consistent success on the field for years. The program recorded just nine wins over the past two seasons, compelling the school to seek change. Vick's hiring was unanimously approved by the Norfolk State Board of Visitors, culminating a three-week process during which he also considered opportunities at other institutions.

During the press conference, NSU President Javaune Adams-Gaston highlighted the significance of this transformative moment for both the university and the surrounding community. "Right now, this transformation means now is our time," Adams-Gaston stated, emphasizing the collective effort required to reshape the fortunes of the institution.

The crowd erupted with cheers of “Behold Green and Gold” as Vick made his way to the podium alongside his family, including his wife, Kijafa Vick. He charmed the audience, joking, "We gonna take it out on [Hampton University] at some point,” sparking enthusiasm among supporters.

Vick discussed what led him to leave his position as Fox Sports analyst. "It wasn’t the easiest decision to make... this requires a lot of change," he said. His motivations lie not solely within football; rather, he aims to make impactful contributions to the lives of young men growing up in his hometown.

"I understand the value of HBCUs," Vick remarked, underlining the importance of African American colleges and their role within the broader NCAA framework. This aspect is particularly significant to him, as he is returning to lead a program set within the community where he grew up. Vick’s sentiments about his new role at Norfolk State show his deep admiration for the historical significance of HBCUs and their potential to provide student-athletes with opportunities often overshadowed by larger programs.

Adding to the optimism surrounding Vick’s hiring, Norfolk State athletic director Melody Webb expressed confidence: "I am confident our football program will establish sustainable recruiting pipelines in the state of Virginia and across the country with this hire," she said, referencing Vick’s considerable achievements as both player and advocate. Webb hopes his acclaim will boost interest among potential recruits.

The support for Vick is also evident beyond the university gates. State Senator Aaron Rouse congratulated him on the milestone, indicating Vick is "uniquely positioned" to succeed. Allen Iverson, the former NBA star and fellow Newport News native, was present as well to demonstrate public backing for Vick. "All my coaching aspirations gonna come through... with Michael Vick," he stated, implicitly reflecting the excitement shared among local sports legends.

Despite his lack of formal coaching experience, Vick's background is riddled with accolades, not the least of which was leading Virginia Tech to the national title game during his college career. His selection first overall by the Atlanta Falcons marked him as the first Black quarterback to achieve such honor, tightly weaving him to the narrative of progress within sports.

Vick’s past, including his incarceration for dogfighting, lends him credibility as he embarks on this new chapter. He has since become vocal against animal cruelty and has turned his life around, positioning himself as someone who can guide young men through their own personal challenges and setbacks. "Football is in my blood, it's always been in me," he commented, indicating how the sport serves as both his platform and sanctuary.

While the transition brings challenges and persistent scrutiny, Vick's hiring ignites enthusiasm for the potential revival of Norfolk State's football program. Positioned against the backdrop of the struggles experienced by the team under previous leadership, Vick’s famed perseverance, alongside the support of the local community, breeds hope for brighter days.

What lies beneath the surface of Vick's tenure at NSU is the unwavering support from both the administration and surrounding community, ready to rally behind him as he embarks on this transformative mission. His commitment to uplifting young men through football could evolve beyond the field, fostering growth, resilience, and integrity among future athletes.

The Norfolk State Spartans now usher in this new chapter, steeped with potential as they look toward the upcoming season with renewed aspiration and collective responsibility.
