Michael Smith Battles Arthritis And Injury After World Masters Loss

The reigning champion opens up about his health struggles following defeat, vowing to return stronger.

Michael Smith, the reigning world champion of darts, has publicly revealed his struggles with arthritis and a shoulder injury, shedding light on his recent dip in form. After suffering a first-round exit at the World Masters tournament on January 30, 2025, Smith took to social media to share the challenges he has been facing. The 34-year-old from St Helens, known affectionately as 'Bully Boy', expressed frustration over rumors of his decline, stating: "Feels like this needed to be said as I'm annoyed seeing 'I'm finished' or 'what's happening it's this or that's.'

Smith's woes began to surface after he was knocked out of the tournament by Dutchman Danny Noppert. Following this unexpected defeat, he felt compelled to explain his situation to his fans and the broader darts community. "I broke both my wrists when I was 19 and now it's catching up with me. I'm now suffering with arthritis to my right hand," he revealed, emphasizing the impact of his past injuries on his current performance.

The former world champion had previously been riding high after winning the title against Michael van Gerwen, where he executed one of the greatest legs of darts ever seen. Yet, his recent challenges have seen him tumble down the rankings to 16th, marking his lowest position since his emergence as a top player. Smith has expressed disappointment at not being selected for this year's Premier League, where he was once a semi-finalist.

Smith's current challenges extend beyond arthritis. He also disclosed struggling with a shoulder injury classified as grade two AC joint injury, which has required him to seek physiotherapy every two to three days. He commented, "This isn't sympathy or a cry for help. This is letting you all in to it. I've never give up or stopped from any pain." His determination and resilience remain intact, as he vows to fight back to his best.

Reflecting on the severity of his recent injuries, Smith acknowledged the influence of his early-career misfortunes, particularly the dual wrist injuries he suffered as a teenager. Recalling the incident, he noted the difficulties he faced during recovery: "I was in casts for five or six months. I couldn’t do anything, showering with two casts was the worst." Now, years later, those injuries are manifesting as arthritis, significantly hindering his performance.

Despite his current setbacks, Smith remains optimistic. He stated, "I see the specialist Monday and when I know, you will know what will happen over the next month or so. I'll never let anything beat me and I promise I'll be back very, very quickly." His comments resonate with his history of tenacity; he once competed with a broken hand during the World Championship finals, demonstrating the relentless spirit he embodies.

Smith's declaration of his health issues is not merely a bid for sympathy but serves as reassurance to fans and supporters. He aims to quash the narrative of his decline, stating, "What this statement means is this is me opening up and letting you all know." His vulnerability amid tribulation is refreshing and signifies his commitment to transparency as he navigates this tough chapter of his sporting career.

The darting community is rallying around Smith as he addresses these personal battles, honoring his past achievements and eagerly awaiting his return to form. With plans to continue seeking medical advice and treatment, fans remain hopeful for the swift recovery of their beloved champion. Only time will tell how Smith's path will shape up, but one thing is clear: his spirit remains unyielded, and his resolve is stronger than ever.
