Miami RedHawks Snubbed By NIT After Impressive Season

Athletic director David Sayler voices disappointment over tournament exclusion following MAC championship loss.

The Miami University men’s basketball team, fresh off what could be called their most successful season yet, is facing disappointment after being snubbed by the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). This has sparked reactions from fans, players, and athletic director David Sayler, who is making his feelings known through social media.

Having finished the season with impressive records, including 25 wins and 15 consecutive victories at Millett Hall, Miami's RedHawks were on cloud nine as they approached the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships. But the euphoria came to a crashing halt after their heartbreaking loss to the University of Akron Zips, finishing with just two points separating them from victory with a score of 76-74.

Despite their strong performance throughout the season, which included three wins against Kent State, the NIT committee chose not to invite the RedHawks to the tournament, opting instead for Kent State, whose record stood at 22-11. Kent State will now represent their conference and compete against St. Bonaventure as Miami looks on from the sidelines.

“These are great moments for our guys. I’m just disappointed we couldn’t finish the race,” said Miami's coach, Travis Steele, following the loss to Akron. Steele expressed hope for future seasons, stating, “There’s no doubt in my mind we’ll be back in this same spot. There’s no doubt.” This sentiment resonates throughout the Miami community.

Adding to the mix, David Sayler, the athletic director for Miami, took to Twitter to voice his steadfast support for the team and criticism against the NIT's decision. “Facts do matter,” he tweeted, emphasizing his belief through several points made about the team's deserving status. His public defense of the athletes has garnered attention and fueled conversations across the social media platform. Sayler remarked, “You can’t get owned on Twitter for an egregious decision,” alluding to the perceived injustice of the situation.

The uproar surrounding Miami’s missing out on the NIT is particularly amplified due to their recent achievements, which include reaching the MAC Championship series for the first time since 2007. The energy at the championship game was electric, with over 7,000 fans attending at Rocket Mortgage Arena. The atmosphere had been charged with excitement, filled with not only fans but also the Miami cheer team and the pep band, all rallying their support for the team.

Christina Arnold, whose daughter is part of the cheerleading squad, traveled several hours from Lebanon, Ohio, just to be part of the action. She shared her enthusiasm, stating, “We’re super pumped, super excited,” highlighting the support the RedHawks have from families and local communities.

Kam Craft, the standout redshirt sophomore wing of the team, exhibited remarkable talent throughout the season, scoring 24 points against Eastern Michigan University and leading with 40 points against Kent State. His abilities on display were not only pivotal to Miami’s success but also factors prompting hope for the upcoming seasons.

Yet, when the invitation list for the NIT was revealed, the collective disappointment was palpable. Miami’s presence at the post-season tournament would not only validate their achievements but also provide them with the opportunity to gain national exposure, something mid-major teams like Miami rely heavily on.

The NIT, traditionally viewed as less prestigious compared to the NCAA tournament, is nevertheless significant for mid-majors. Winning games can affect their recruiting and legacy within the sport. For many students and fans alike, it's not just about the trophies but the experiences and visibility the tournament can provide.

“I love the Mid-American Conference because anyone can win, you never know who’s gonna end up as champion,” noted one long-time supporter of the Miami RedHawks, emphasizing the unpredictability and excitement associated with conference play.

With the dust still settling from this intense season, the Miami community stands resilient, rallying behind its team, hopeful for future victories. The disappointment of being excluded from the NIT will surely fuel their fire for next season, igniting their aspirations even higher.

Although Miami’s season ended short of the tournament expectations, the RedHawks have laid down strong groundwork for the future. The determination expressed by their coach and the passionate backing from the fans will play significant roles as the team gears up for the next chapter. With young players and returning talent, Miami’s path may lead them back to greatness sooner rather than later.
