Mexico Confirms 12% Minimum Wage Increase For 2025

New wage adjustment aims to support workers' financial stability amid rising living costs.

The Mexican government has confirmed plans to raise the minimum wage starting January 1, 2025, marking significant progress for workers across the country.

This increase, set at 12% compared to the 2024 wage, aims to help workers achieve financial stability and cover basic living costs, including 2.5 baskets of basic goods.

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the details, affirming coverage for various sectors including builders, cooks, electricians, and many more.

"This is not just about wage increases; it’s about ensuring our workforce can afford necessities," Sheinbaum stated. The raise will adjust the general minimum daily wage from 248.93 pesos to 278.80 pesos, providing monthly earnings of approximately 8,364 pesos. Meanwhile, workers in the Zona Libre de la Frontera Norte will see daily wages rise from 374.89 pesos to 419.88 pesos, amounting to about 12,596 pesos per month.

The changes were included after legislative approval and will start to take effect with the first salary payments of the new year, with many workers likely seeing the increase reflected by January 15, 2025, depending on their payment schedule.

Notably, the adjustment to the minimum wage highlights the government’s commitment to improving workers' living conditions and responding to rising living costs.

Additional information about the implementation and its impacts will be made available through official government channels. The planned increase is part of Mexico's overall strategy to uplift the economic conditions of its workforce and address the challenge of inflation and cost of living adjustments.

Workers and advocates alike anticipate this wage hike as part of broader economic reforms aimed at enhancing the purchasing power of the country's labor force, especially for those earning at or near minimum wage.
