Mexico Braces For Severe Weather On February 21, 2025

Heavy rains, strong winds, and temperature extremes expected across the country

The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) has outlined the anticipated weather conditions across Mexico for today, February 21, 2025, with alerts issued for severe weather expected throughout the country. The presence of cold front No. 28 continues to affect multiple regions, including the Yucatán Peninsula, leading to significant rainfall and temperature variations.

According to the SMN, the cold front will be stationary over the Gulf of Mexico and the peninsula, interacting with low-pressure systems, which is expected to produce heavy rains and strong winds across northern and southeastern Mexico.

Today’s forecast highlights notable rainfall conditions: heavy to torrential rain is predicted for states such as Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, with forecasts indicating rainfall amounts ranging from 50 to 75 mm. Meanwhile, areas like Puebla, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo are expected to see more moderate rainfall of 25 to 50 mm.

Further inland, cities like Ciudad de México, Guanajuato, and Michoacán will experience lighter rainfalls, with estimates of 5 to 25 mm, according to the SMN.

Wind conditions are also expected to play a significant role throughout the day, particularly along the coast. Veracruz and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec are forecasted to experience strong north winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h, with gusts potentially topping 60 to 80 km/h. Other regions including Tamaulipas will see similar conditions, emphasizing the need for caution along coastal areas.

Meanwhile, temperatures across Mexico will exhibit stark contrasts. Highs of 35 to 40 °C are expected for coastal states such as Sinaloa, Jalisco, and Guerrero, which is typical of this time of year for those regions. On the flip side, mountainous areas of Chihuahua and Durango could experience sub-zero temperatures, with expected night-time lows dropping between -10 to -5 °C. Other areas, including parts of Baja California and Sonora, also register lows around -5 to 0 °C.

Conditions across the Valley of Mexico will remain varied, with morning temperatures ranging from 10 to 12 °C, climbing to daytime highs of 20 to 22 °C. Residents should prepare for cloudy skies and potential scattered showers.

To complement this weather briefing, the authorities have issued several recommendations for safety, particularly for those impacted by the forecasted severe weather. The Secretaría de Gestión Integral de Riesgos y Protección Civil encourages residents to:

  • Keep emergency supplies handy, such as flashlights and portable radios.

  • Avoid throwing trash near waterways and risk areas.

  • Stay clear of structures like fences, trees, and other objects susceptible to strong winds.

  • Dress appropriately for the cold, especially during early mornings when temperatures dip significantly.

  • Stay hydrated and consume warm liquids to help maintain body heat.

With these diverse and sometimes extreme weather conditions expected to persist, the SMN stresses the importance of staying informed and making prudent decisions. Residents are reminded to be prepared for sudden changes and potential hazards throughout this severe weather period.

This weather update serves as both guidance for daily activity planning and reassurance of the necessary precautions to navigate today’s complicated climatic outlook for Mexico.
