Mexican Divers Berlín And Willars Win Silver Medal

The duo shines at World Cup as they prepare for Los Angeles 2028

In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Mexican divers Kevin Berlín and Randal Willars clinched a silver medal in the men's synchronized 10-meter platform event at the 2025 Diving World Cup held in Guadalajara. This remarkable achievement not only marks the second medal for Mexico in the competition but also sets the stage for their journey towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The competition took place at the Metropolitan Aquatic Center, where Berlín and Willars showcased their diving prowess against a backdrop of intense pressure and high expectations. From the very first dive, the duo made their intentions clear, finishing the initial round in first place with a score of 51.00 points. However, they faced stiff competition, particularly from the formidable Chinese pair of Zifeng Zhu and Zilong Cheng, who were hot on their heels.

After the second dive, Berlín and Willars found themselves in a precarious position, dropping to third with a total of 100.20 points, trailing closely behind Ukraine's 101.40 and China's 102.60. But the Mexican athletes were undeterred. They executed an impressive inverse three-and-a-half somersault in their third dive, scoring 84.66 points, which propelled them back into first place with a cumulative score of 184.66 points.

As the competition progressed, the tension escalated. The fourth dive, a backward three-and-a-half somersault, earned them 85.32 points, bringing their total to 270.18 points. Yet again, they faced a setback as the Chinese divers surged ahead with a score of 272.10 points, pushing Berlín and Willars back to second place.

With the stakes higher than ever, the Mexican duo maintained their composure. They performed a forward three-and-a-half somersault in their fifth dive, which earned them 81.03 points, bringing their total to 351.21 points. Despite their best efforts, the Chinese pair held a significant lead with a score of 362.01 points.

In their final dive, Berlín and Willars executed a solid performance, earning 84.24 points, which culminated in a final score of 435.45 points. This impressive total secured them the silver medal, just 14 points shy of the gold medalists from China, Zifeng Zhu and Zilong Cheng, who finished with 449.49 points. The bronze medal went to the neutral pair of Ruslan Ternovoi and Nikita Shleikher, who scored 400.32 points.

Throughout the event, Berlín and Willars displayed remarkable resilience, consistently demonstrating their ability to handle pressure. Berlín expressed his satisfaction with the performance, stating, "Despite feeling the pressure, I decided to enjoy every moment of the competition, knowing we had the home advantage." Willars echoed this sentiment, sharing his joy about having his family present in the audience, providing support from the stands.

"My main motivation for this competition was the craving for some tacos as a reward for our efforts," Berlín humorously remarked after the event, highlighting the lighthearted spirit that accompanied their serious endeavor.

As they celebrate this significant achievement, Berlín and Willars are already looking ahead, with their sights set on the upcoming World Championships in Singapore later this year. They understand the importance of these competitions in measuring their skills against the world's best divers.

Earlier in the day, the Mexican delegation celebrated another victory as sisters Mía and Lía Cueva secured a silver medal in the women's synchronized 3-meter springboard event, marking their official debut in international competition. Their score of 298.08 points has set the stage for a promising future in diving.

The performances of Berlín, Willars, and the Cueva sisters at the 2025 Diving World Cup have underscored Mexico's status as a powerhouse in the sport, showcasing the nation’s talent and dedication to diving on a global stage. With the Olympic cycle leading up to Los Angeles 2028, the future looks bright for Mexican diving.

As the competition wraps up, the Mexican team has proven their mettle, leaving fans excited for what lies ahead. The commitment to excellence and the pursuit of Olympic glory continue to drive these athletes forward, reminding everyone that they are a force to be reckoned with in the world of diving.
