Methane Explosion Rocks Sichuan After Boy Throws Firecracker

The incident raises urgent safety concerns over firecracker use near septic tanks following similar past tragedies.

A methane explosion triggered by the careless actions of a young boy led to chaos on Thursday afternoon in Zizhong County, Sichuan Province. The incident occurred when the boy, approximately 10 years old, tossed firecrackers through the opening of a septic tank located in a car park.

According to local authorities, the explosion created a massive crater, flipped one car upside down, and caused severe damage to several other vehicles parked nearby. Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities were reported. Surveillance footage of the incident, which quickly gained traction online, showed the boy lighting the firecracker before fleeing the scene moments before the explosion occurred. Seconds later, flames and thick smoke erupted from the tank, followed by the powerful blast.

The explosion hurled black sludge across the parking area and lifted the parked vehicle dramatically, leaving it upside down. Nearby vehicles suffered broken windows, destroyed mirrors, and door damage as the force of the explosion shattered glass and debris scattered around the vicinity. First responders quickly cordoned off the area to facilitate repair efforts, deploying cranes to assist with cleanup and removal of the damaged cars.

A particularly alarming aspect of the incident was the fact another vehicle containing a female driver had just vacated the area before the explosion occurred. She narrowly escaped potential injury.

Local authorities moved swiftly following the incident; they managed to locate the boy within the hour and commenced investigations, which included liaising with his family. Meanwhile, the explosion drew significant public attention on social media platforms like China’s Sina Weibo and Douyin, with the incident trending for its shocking visuals. Reports highlighted over 80.86 million views across these platforms, effectively capturing widespread public concern about firecracker safety.

This incident is just one of many recent occurrences involving children and firecrackers leading to unforeseen accidents. Authorities have previously reported on similar explosions, including one on Monday where a young girl ignited firecrackers on top of a manhole cover, causing injuries. Fortunately, the girl’s injuries were confirmed as non-life-threatening.

These recent events have raised alarm over safety, particularly concerning children using firecrackers where the risks of flammable gases from sewage systems are present. For example, back in February 2023, two children were involved in another grievous incident where firecrackers ignited on top of manhole covers, resulting tragically in the death of one child.

Chinese officials have responded to these tragedies by consolidatively urging the public to remain cautious about igniting firecrackers—especially around hazardous environments like septic tanks and sewage systems. China Fire and Rescue has been proactive, releasing multiple safety alerts emphasizing the dangers associated with using firecrackers without proper supervision or the awareness of underlying dangers. They have used their official WeChat account to remind parents to supervise children, particularly during the festive seasons when such occurrences heavily escalate.

This latest explosion serves as another somber reminder of the potential hazards posed by seemingly innocent festivities as calls for increased safety awareness continue to grow. With the Spring Festival approaching, authorities and educators enjoin the public to take greater care when handling flammable products and remind families to educate children about the seriousness of fire safety.

While the excitement of fireworks often casts a festive aura during celebrations, the Zizhong explosion serves as evidence of the risks involved and the need for responsible practices when celebrating with firecrackers.
