Metallurg Secures Overtime Win To Advance To KHL Playoffs

A thrilling victory against Sarov-2 propels Metallurg forward with strong momentum for the upcoming postseason.

The Metallurg hockey team pulled off a thrilling overtime victory against Sarov-2 on February 2, 2025, securing their spot in the playoffs of the KHL championship. The match, held at the Batashov Arena in Vyksa, showcased intense competition and the determination of both teams as they fought for every chance on the ice.

The game began at a high pace, with both teams displaying aggressive offense and strong defenses. Despite numerous attempts at goals, both goalkeepers remained vigilant, showcasing impressive skills. It wasn’t until the second period when Metallurg’s Andre Chizhov aimed at the Sarov-2 net, creating chaos as Georgy Menshov capitalized on the rebound, putting Metallurg on the scoreboard.

Just as the home team seemed to gain momentum, Sarov-2 responded swiftly. After Metallurg scored, it didn’t take long for them to level the score. Sarov’s Andre Pospelov blocked one shot from the defense but inadvertently passed it to Stepan Mironshchenko, who equalized just minutes later.

The third period saw both teams tightening their strategies. They realized the high stakes of any mistake during play. Players collided during tensely fought skirmishes behind the nets, and scoring chances became rare. One standout moment occurred when Metallurg’s Pyotr Kuznetski raced down the ice on a breakaway but was thwarted by Sarov-2’s goalie, Nikita Baluev, who made the stop of the game.

After regulation time ended with the score tied 1-1, the match entered overtime. Here, the intensity escalated as both teams sought the decisive goal. With only seconds left on the clock, Chizhov entered the Sarov zone with the puck and made a masterful pass to Nikolai Kulikov, who found the open corner to seal the game at 2-1 for Metallurg.

This victory is particularly significant as it not only allows Metallurg to secure third place but also pushes them forward to meet Lyskovo’s Torpedo for the quarterfinals. The series will be intense, as it is played to the best of three, with the first match set for February 9 and the subsequent games scheduled for February 15 and, if necessary, February 16.

Metallurg completed the regular season with 29 points from 12 matches, achieving nine wins during regular time along with one overtime victory. Their season performance has reflected substantial teamwork and resilience, and the players are eager to carry this momentum forward.

Fans of Metallurg can expect exciting gameplay and strategic clashes as their team advances through the playoffs. With the upcoming series against Torpedo, the energy and commitment seen against Sarov-2 indicate they will put up strong competition as they aim for the championship.

On February 2, as the crowd cheered for their heroes, Batashov Arena echoed with celebrations marking both the achievements of Metallurg's hockey team and their promising future.
