Meta did include a pop-up warning stating, “Prompts you post are public and visible to everyone… Avoid sharing personal or sensitive information.” Yet, as user experience research has long demonstrated, most people do not alter default settings. The company’s decision to make public sharing the default option essentially broadcasts the majority of user interactions without explicit consent or clear understanding.

Though Meta claims sharing conversations is an opt-in process, the interface offers minimal warnings and lacks a robust double-check mechanism. Meta’s public feed debacle pulls back the curtain on a disturbing reality: many AI companies harvest intimate conversations for profit while users shoulder the risks of exposure. Although violations of regulations like the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) can result in fines up to €20 million or 4% of global revenue, enforcement remains scarce both in Europe and the United States. Even when companies attempt compliance, existing frameworks like GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) do not adequately address how personal data is handled in AI training or model outputs.

Privacy advocates and European Union regulators have responded with calls for stricter controls and even temporary suspension of Meta’s Discover feed until the company addresses its glaring privacy flaws. Critics argue that Meta’s aggressive push to integrate AI across its platforms has outpaced its ability to safeguard users, leaving millions vulnerable to accidental oversharing and identity exposure.
