Met Office Issues Fog Warning Disrupting Travel Across England

Dense fog causes flight delays and potential disruptions across northern regions as visibility decreases dramatically.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for fog affecting areas of northern England, with expectations for traffic and travel disruptions. The warning was announced late on Sunday night, March 9, 2025, and will be enforced for more than 10 hours, running from 10:40 PM on Sunday through 9 PM on Monday.

According to the Met Office, the fog is predicted to develop across parts of northeast England, Yorkshire, and Humberside. Dense fog is likely, with visibility dropping to as low as 50 meters at times.

Travel disruptions are anticipated, particularly for those driving or utilizing public transport. The warning emphasizes the importance of checking road conditions, allowing extra time for journeys, and ensuring fog lights are functional before departure. Commuters are advised to stay updated on any potential delays for bus and train services, as well as flights and ferry travel.

The warning encompasses several specific areas, including:

  • North East England: Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Redcar and Cleveland, South Tyneside, Stockton-on-Tees, Sunderland.

  • Yorkshire & Humber: East Riding of Yorkshire, Kingston upon Hull, North Lincolnshire, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, York.

Flight operations have begun to reflect the impact of the fog. At Newcastle Airport, several flights were delayed and some arrivals were diverted to Leeds and Manchester due to low visibility. Two specific flights have already seen diversions: the British Airways flight from London Heathrow, which was redirected to Manchester, and the German Airways flight from Amsterdam, which landed at Leeds Bradford Airport.

Other delayed arrivals included the 8:30 AM Aer Lingus flight from Dublin and another British Airways flight from London. The moves have caused frustration among travelers, especially as several other flights scheduled to depart around the same time also faced delays. Flight data indicates multiple disruptions, with flights to Fuerteventura, Amsterdam, Marrakech, and Paris still waiting to take off.

The Met Office’s prediction for the rest of the day suggests clearing conditions following the fog, leading to finer and warmer weather for most areas, barring some cooler coastal breezes and possibly developing low cloud formations later. The maximum temperature expected on Monday is approximately 17 °C.

Travelers are encouraged to stay informed and adjust their schedules as necessary to minimize inconvenience. The Met Office has advised caution on the roads and suggests keeping updated with their weather service for any changes as the day progresses.
