Met Gala 2025 Celebrates Black Dandyism Through Tailored Style

Stars shine in unique interpretations of this year's theme at the iconic fashion event

The Met Gala 2025, held on May 5, marked a significant moment in fashion history as it celebrated the theme "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." This year’s event, co-chaired by Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour, was particularly notable for its focus on menswear, the first since 2003.

The theme draws inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s influential book, "Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity," which explores the evolution and significance of Black dandyism from the 18th century to the present. The exhibition associated with the gala will be on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from May 10 to October 26, 2025, showcasing the pivotal role of sartorial style in shaping Black identities.

This year’s dress code, "Tailored For You," encouraged guests to embrace the theme creatively, and they did not disappoint. A-list celebrities brought their best interpretations to the red carpet, making it a night of unforgettable fashion statements.

Among the standout looks was Zendaya, who dazzled in a tailored cream suit by Louis Vuitton, complemented by a wide-brimmed hat. Her ensemble was a nod to Bianca Jagger's iconic wedding outfit from 1971, showcasing the blend of historical inspiration with modern elegance.

Kim Kardashian opted for an all-black ensemble by Chrome Hearts, featuring a fitted leather top and skirt, accented with diamond necklaces. Known for her bold fashion choices, Kardashian's look was both striking and sophisticated.

Demi Moore took a literal approach to the theme, wearing a sculptural black and white striped sequin gown from Thom Browne that resembled a men's tie. This creative interpretation highlighted her understanding of the evening's sartorial significance.

Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny brought his heritage to the forefront with a brown Prada suit, which he collaborated on with the fashion house for several months. He accessorized with embellished gloves and a hat, stating, "We did something special. I feel good, and I hope people think I'm looking good." His look was a beautiful homage to his roots.

Rihanna, always a highlight at the Met Gala, made headlines not just for her fashion but also for debuting her pregnancy with A$AP Rocky. She wore a stunning ensemble by Marc Jacobs, marking a significant moment in her fashion journey.

Diana Ross turned heads in a dramatic white outfit adorned with feathers and a long train, requiring assistance to manage her elaborate look. She shared that her son encouraged her to attend, as it was her first Met Gala appearance since 2003.

Sir Lewis Hamilton, co-chair of the event, was dressed by British designer Grace Wales Bonner. His outfit was a reflection of contemporary Black male identity, combining elegance with cultural significance.

Other notable appearances included Sydney Sweeney in a custom Miu Miu gown, which featured beaded fringe shoulders and gold hardware, and Barry Keoghan, who wore a custom-made Valentino fit embellished with florals.

Lorde made a rare appearance, wearing a metallic silver floor-length skirt set by Thom Browne, while Olympic gymnast Simone Biles stunned in a striking blue minidress designed by Harbison Studio.

Coco Jones opted for a tailored cream and white look designed by Indian brand Manish Malhotra, complete with ornate embroidery and a dramatic coat. Colman Domingo, another co-chair, showcased a royal blue Valentino cloak that paid tribute to the late Andre Leon Talley.

Teyana Taylor arrived in a burgundy cape embroidered with "Harlem Rose," a nod to her song, while Emma Chamberlain sported a backless tailored suit dress by Courrèges, accentuating her edgy style.

Cynthia Erivo dazzled in a Givenchy ensemble featuring a bedazzled bodice, and Sabrina Carpenter wore a burgundy Louis Vuitton bodysuit designed in collaboration with Pharrell Williams, who is also the men's creative director of the brand.

Doja Cat made a statement in a custom Marc Jacobs look featuring oversized shoulder pads, expressing her desire to embody a strong, bold aesthetic. Tracee Ellis Ross stood out in a custom Marc Jacobs suit with a giant hot pink bow, adding a playful touch to her look.

Andre 3000 captured attention with a unique outfit featuring a black and white piano strapped to his back, designed in collaboration with Burberry, while Lupita Nyong'o wore a stunning powder blue Chanel suit, complete with a matching hat and rhinestone eyebrows.

Cardi B debuted a new hairstyle and eye color in a green Burberry pantsuit, while Doechii made her Met Gala debut in a Louis Vuitton suit that showcased her artistic flair.

Janelle Monáe, a longtime Met Gala attendee, wore a Thom Browne suit that challenged traditional notions of gender and fashion, stating, "I want to deconstruct respectability politics around suiting and around how Black people can show up in the world." Her statement resonated with the evening's theme of individuality and expression.

Madonna also made a memorable appearance, accessorizing her cream tuxedo with a cigar, embodying the interplay of femininity and masculinity that has characterized her career.

As the night unfolded, the Met Gala 2025 not only celebrated fashion but also the rich history and cultural significance of Black dandyism, highlighting how style can serve as a powerful form of expression and identity. The event was a testament to the creativity and artistry within the fashion community, leaving attendees and viewers alike eager for what future Met Galas will bring.
