Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its latest electric vehicle, the CLA EV, which marks the brand's entry point for electric cars, boasting impressive technology and performance specifications aimed to rival the Tesla Model 3.
The CLA EV, described as 21st compact sedan for the electric vehicle era,2 has been engineered to outperform its predecessor models on all fronts. With the ability to travel nearly 800 km on a single charge, the CLA 250+ can achieve up to 492 miles (792 km) according to the WLTP standard, which positions it as a formidable competitor in the fast-growing electric vehicle market.
This new offering from Mercedes-Benz utilizes state-of-the-art 800V technology and can gain 200 miles (approximately 320 km) of range in just 10 minutes when using a 320 kW DC fast charger, showcasing its rapid recharging capability.
Mercedes credits the remarkable performance of the CLA EV to its newly developed 85 kWh NMC battery, which boasts a 20% higher energy density than previous models. To maximize its range, the car has been strategically crafted with a low drag coefficient of 0.21, even surpassing the Tesla Model 3's drag coefficient of 0.22.
The design of the CLA EV incorporates modern aesthetics with functional elegance. Standing at 4,722 mm long—40 mm longer than its predecessor—it closely matches the Tesla Model 3's length of 4,720 mm. The extended wheelbase of 2,789 mm contributes to spacious seating for both front and rear passengers and introduces additional cargo space with the inclusion of a front trunk of 2.5 cubic feet.
Inside, the cabin adopts a sleek and contemporary design, featuring a 10.25-inch driver display and 14-inch infotainment screen, along with the option of another 14-inch display for passengers. Highlights include the prominent floating center console equipped with dual-layers, cup holders, and wireless smartphone charging capabilities.
Mercedes-Benz has positioned the CLA EV as its smartest car yet, being the first model equipped with the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). This system integrates cutting-edge AI technologies from Microsoft and Google, including the Automotive AI Agent from Google Cloud, which can plan the quickest routes and identify charging stations based on real-time traffic conditions.
Adding to the user experience, the CLA EV introduces Virtual Assist, powered by ChatGPT 4.0 and Microsoft Bing Search. With voice commands initiated by saying, "Hey, Mercedes," this feature provides instant feedback and navigation assistance, marking significant advancements toward seamless human-vehicle interaction.
The CLA EV is available in two configurations: the CLA 250+, featuring rear-wheel drive with 268 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque, and the CLA 350 4MATIC model, which is all-wheel drive, producing 349 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. Remarkably, the CLA 250+ exceeds the range capabilities of the EQS 450+, rated at 481 miles (774 km). Although the CLA 350 has slightly less range, it is still impressive, reaching around 480 miles (771 km) according to WLTP standards.
Looking forward, Mercedes plans to release hybrid versions of the CLA EV, offering both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive options. This strategic expansion will cater to diverse driver needs and preferences as electric vehicles continue to grow in popularity.
