Mental Health Crisis Hits Ontario Youth

Study shows sharp rise in psychological distress among students amid climate and economic concerns

Ontario's youth are facing alarming mental health challenges as new research shows over half of middle and high school students report severe psychological distress. This troubling figure reflects a doubling over the past decade, according to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

The survey, which gathered insights from more than 10,000 students across grades 7 to 12, was conducted between November 2022 and June 2023 at 235 schools across the province. CAMH officials characterize the findings as 'worrying', emphasizing the urgent need for mental health support for students.

Data from the survey indicates concerning trends: 19% of students admitted to self-harming, and 18% seriously contemplated suicide over the past year. Survey lead Hayley Hamilton highlighted the stark reality, stating, "Students are struggling," reflecting deep-seated mental health issues.

While many students are aware of their mental health needs, the survey revealed about one-third required professional support without seeking help. The reasons varied from believing they could handle their issues alone to concerns about being judged or simply feeling too busy.

Alexia Polillo, a CAMH scientist, articulated the gravity of the situation, noting, "We know the mental health is worse for young people right now than it's ever been." She noted it was particularly jarring to see the research confirming the extent of distress among today’s youth.

Compounding the stressors are factors like climate change anxiety, job insecurity, and soaring living costs. Olivia Tocher, 17, and a youth adviser at CAMH, expressed the sentiment shared by many youths: "We just are a generation who's grown up where we're constantly told our future is scary."

Interestingly, the survey also pointed out mental health worries among youths related to climate change, with 18% stating they fear it greatly, and 45% feeling depressed due to the concern for the planet. These insights reveal the significant role societal happenings play on youth mental health.

Despite the gloominess surrounding mental health, the latest survey did highlight some positive trends too. For the first time, the survey indicated dramatic declines in youth drug use, including cannabis and alcohol intake.

Still, trends also revealed shifts among demographics. Female students now report higher rates of cannabis, vaping, and alcohol consumption than their male counterparts, which may indicate increasing pressures faced by girls.

Dr. Leslie Buckley from CAMH remarked on the need for more research to understand these trends fully. Understanding why female students are more likely to engage with these substances may shed light on the unique pressures they face.

While the findings are alarming, they also highlight the pressing need for adequate mental health education and support services. Ontario’s education system is beginning to address this by introducing mental health education aimed at raising awareness and equipping students with coping strategies.

Overall, these survey results serve as a wake-up call for policymakers and mental health organizations. With youth mental health deteriorated to such levels, community response and resources must quickly adapt to these growing needs.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, it’s important to seek support. Crisis resources are available 24/7 by calling or texting 988 or reaching out to local mental health services.
