Men Dress As Bear To Commit Insurance Fraud

California authorities arrest four for staging attacks on luxury vehicles and claiming insurance payouts

The lengths some people will go for an insurance payout can be quite extraordinary, and this bizarre tale from California proves just how far some individuals might stretch the truth. Four men have recently been arrested for their involvement in what authorities are calling the "Bear Attack Insurance Scam." This audacious and rather unusual scheme allegedly involved them dressing up as bears to defraud insurance companies out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The suspects, identified as Ruben Tamrazian (26), Ararat Chirkinian (39), Vahe Muradkhanyan (32), and Alfiya Zuckerman (39), reportedly filed claims stating their luxury vehicles had been damaged by a bear. Their claims included significant damages to high-end cars like a 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost, 2015 Mercedes G63 AMG, and a 2022 Mercedes E350, totaling more than $141,839 (around C$200,000) from various insurance companies.

Interestingly, the alleged bear attacks occurred around Lake Arrowhead, located high within the San Bernardino Mountains. The incidents supposedly took place back in January, with the men claiming one of the attacks involved a bear entering the parked Rolls-Royce and damaging its interior. To support their outrageous claim, they even submitted video footage to the insurance company.

What they likely thought would be their clever ruse would soon unravel. California Department of Insurance officials stated, "Upon closer inspection of the surveillance video, we found evidence indicating the bear was actually just someone wearing a full bear costume." This turned out to be the fatal misstep for the group who were attempting to feign wildlife destruction.

After suspicions arose, the insurance department enlisted the help of biologists from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to review the video evidence. The biologists concluded definitively: it was not just any bear, but clearly, it was human masquerading as one.

The supposedly convincing footage showed what looked like the bear climbing around inside the luxury vehicles with wild abandon. Instead of wildlife causing havoc, it appeared someone was having fun with their costume. Photos released by the California Department of Insurance showed alleged damage to the cars, which included scratch marks on the leather seats and door interiors.

Upon executing search warrants on the suspects’ homes, police discovered the actual bear costume—a full suit complete with claws and even faux bear teeth. Not exactly what one expects to find when alleging damages caused by wild bears. This evidence proved pivotal, reinforcing the notion these grievances were fabricated.

One might wonder why anyone would think such a scheme would successfully fool insurance agents. While California is home to thousands of black bears, which can sometimes wander too close to suburban areas, the apparent idea of these four individuals hoping to execute such outlandish claims through obtuse methods does raise many eyebrows about their reasoning.

Local law enforcement officials noted the bear costume was outfitted with metal tools, likely intended to simulate the natural claws of bears, providing what they hoped would be compelling evidence of the alleged attack. Investigators have dubbed their comprehensive investigation "Operation Bear Claw" to encapsulate this unique fraudulent scheme.

The legal repercussions for the men have only begun as the charges against them include insurance fraud and conspiracy to defraud. The detectives involved have expressed disbelief at the lengths these individuals went to perpetuate their fraud. Their actions have brought unwanted attention not only to their own lives but to the fragile relationship between wildlife and residents living adjacent to bear habitats.

Reports indicated the story resonates well beyond just the absurdity of the scam; it also shines light on the measures insurance companies must go to protect themselves from fraudulent claims. It is, unfortunately, not uncommon for both individuals and companies to exploit loopholes to achieve payouts, though often it is more discreet than what was attempted here.

Insurance fraud can cover various schemes, often more cloaked than attempting to pass off as wild animals. Yet this bizarre case of human turning to costume to emulate wildlife stands out as particularly ludicrous. Law enforcement are encouraged as they assist Californians and local districts to monitor and control illegal activities, fraud cases being no exception.

When people think of bears wreaking havoc, they might visualize wild animals causing chaos, perhaps rummaging through garbage or breaking windows. But this affair reminds everyone just how creative—and somewhat ludicrous—human beings can get when trying to game the system.

Insurance companies are likely to tighten their regulations and surveillance measures, inspired by cases like this, which challenge the balance of benefits versus potential abuse of systems. And as for the bears? They are likely to continue causing innocent mischief and avoid any association with such bizarre antics.

The spectacle here is part of the wild circus known as human creativity—one where bear suits and luxury cars intersect, telling us much about the sometimes outlandish ways which people attempt to navigate the systems built to protect them. Perhaps future discussions on insurance fraud should include not just conspiring individuals, but also those wearing costumes, ready to create mischief under the cover of night.
