Memorial Services Announced For Congressman Raúl Grijalva

Hundreds gather in Tucson to honor the legacy of the late congressman while memorial plans are set.

The family of the late U.S. Representative Raúl Grijalva has announced plans for memorial services in Tucson next week, marking the end of a significant chapter in Arizona politics. Grijalva, known for his lengthy tenure and progressive values, passed away at the age of 77 after a courageous battle with lung cancer on March 13, 2025.

Expecting a large turnout, the family has scheduled a series of events to celebrate the life and legacy of Grijalva. A rosary service will take place on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, located at 602 W. Ajo Way. This will be an opportunity for family, friends, and constituents to gather and reflect on Grijalva’s impact.

On Wednesday, March 26, the day will begin with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral, situated at 192 S. Stone Ave. After the Mass, a “celebration of life” event will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the El Casino Ballroom, 437 E. 26th St., where attendees are encouraged to come together to share their memories.

Grijalva’s family, in lieu of flowers, has requested that donations be made to the Raúl M. Grijalva Scholarship Fund. This initiative reflects his dedication to education and support for future generations. Grijalva’s daughter, Adelita Grijalva, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time, saying, “Mil gracias for the outpouring of love and support to our family since the passing of my wonderful dad.”

In addition to these memorial services, hundreds of Tucsonans attended a candlelit vigil on Sunday, March 16, 2025. This heartfelt gathering highlighted the profound impact Grijalva had on the community. Attendees lit white candles and shared stories of their memories with the congressman, underscoring the legacy of love and service he left behind.

During the vigil, Adelita Grijalva took to the podium, encouraging participants to embrace their sadness while also celebrating her father's life. “You know my dad ... really didn’t want us all crying and praying rosaries over him, he really wanted us to do something,” she said, urging the crowd to continue his legacy of activism and community engagement.

The long-serving congressman was known for championing progressive causes, including efforts related to tribal resources, environmental justice, and immigration reform. Grijalva spent over two decades in office, serving as the chair of the U.S. House Resources Committee from 2018 to 2023.

Feedback from community leaders showcased the significant influence Grijalva had on various sectors. Pascua Yaqui Vice Chairman Peter Yucupicio noted his contributions, stating, “He has made a ton of difference, not only for humans, but for the animals, for the mountains that we treasure, for the skies that we breathe.” Indeed, Grijalva worked tirelessly for the recognition of tribal rights and environmental protections throughout his career.

Other notable speakers included Angela Valenzuela from the League of United Latin American Citizens' National Task Force on Higher Education, and former colleagues like Dan Eckstrom, who praised Grijalva’s commitment to bettering the community.

Grijalva publicly announced his lung cancer diagnosis in the spring of 2024, subsequently deciding not to seek re-election in 2026, a choice he made after reflecting on his health challenges. Since his passing, Tucson Mayor Regina Romero has announced she will not seek to fill his seat, leaving the political landscape of southern Arizona poised for change.

Following the passing of this beloved representative, there is speculation about potential successors. Adelita Grijalva has emerged as a prominent frontrunner for the role, indicating she would announce her intentions regarding a potential candidacy after the memorial services are concluded.

As the community prepares to commemorate this influential figure, the memorial services provide an occasion not only to mourn but to celebrate a life devoted to public service. Raúl Grijalva will be remembered not just for his political achievements, but for the lasting connections he forged within his community—a testament to his commitment to advocacy and public service.
