After seven months of suspension for racist remarks made on Instagram during the France rugby team’s summer tour to Argentina, Melvyn Jaminet made his return to competitive rugby. The international fullback for RC Toulon entered the game against Stade Français at the 60th minute, to the cheering of supporters at Stade Mayol.
'He did what he had to do. I’m not going to dwell on it; now he needs a bit of space,' commented Toulon coach Pierre Mignoni during the post-match press conference.
Mignoni acknowledged the challenges Jaminet faced during his suspension, noting, 'It was tough for him to watch others play. But rightly so. We’re not complaining; he’s not complaining. Now, it’s behind him. He just wants to be back playing rugby. He’s 25, he’s paid his debt, and now it's time to play.'
Mignoni stressed the importance of accountability, stating, 'One must face their mistakes. Accepting the sanctions was necessary. These sanctions were appropriate. For me, it continues; all the social actions he took are not just for show.'
Regarding the positive reception from fans, Mignoni expressed satisfaction: 'I thank the people for supporting him at this time. It’s good for him. He’s a young player who made a mistake. This mistake is unacceptable, which is why there was punishment. The people are supporting the young player who has paid his debt. Not more than this. It’s beneficial for him, for his mindset, and for his morale. It surely does him good.'
Jaminet’s suspension had been enforced for 26 weeks by the French Rugby Federation after his racist comments were posted online. Now back, he replaced Marius Domon for his first minutes of the season and was celebrated immediately upon entering the field.
His manager, Pierre Mignoni, had said before the match, 'He has paid his debt with his weeks of suspension.' This emphasizes the club’s support for Jaminet as he aims to rebuild his career following this incident.
