Meitetsu Electric Railway Expands With New Commercial Projects

New facilities and foreign driver recruitment aim to boost local economy and address driver shortages.

Meitetsu Electric Railway is embarking on significant expansions aimed at boosting local commerce and addressing labor shortages. Among its key initiatives is the opening of new commercial facilities at Gifu Park, set to launch on April 26. This project aims not only to attract tourists but also to reinvigorate the local economy through the promotion of regional cuisines.

The new facility, named Gifu Castle Rakuchi, is inspired by the historical concept of Rakuchi Rakuzai, which was popularized during the era of Oda Nobunaga. The facility will feature 11 shops where visitors can enjoy walking food experiences, significantly enhancing the area's appeal to tourists visiting Gifu Castle and the surrounding attractions.

A hallmark of Meitetsu's commitment to community engagement involves its innovative approach to recruitment, particularly through its collaboration with local Japanese schools. They are focusing on training foreign bus drivers to alleviate the acute shortage of drivers affecting public transportation systems across Japan. Kenji Suzuki, of Brazilian-Japanese descent, made history recently as the first foreign bus driver for Meitetsu. His hiring ceremony took place on February 3, 2025.

Suzuki expressed his aspirations succinctly: "I aim to become a safe and reliable bus driver." His training will involve partnership support from EGAO Group, which will provide language education and lifestyle assistance to foreign trainees. This collaborative model is being referred to as the "Okazaki Model." It aims to secure the workforce for public transportation by integrating educational systems with employment opportunities.

The grass-roots efforts see Meitetsu working directly with the city of Okazaki and the local education sector, showcasing the significant community networking needed to counteract the regional labor shortage. This framework differentiates itself as quite unique compared to standard approaches taken by other transportation companies across the nation.

With the new projects and the recruitment drive, Meitetsu Electric Railway is strategically positioning itself not only to facilitate public transport smoother but also to enrich cultural encounters for both locals and visitors. The innovative commercial spaces are intended to become focal points for greater interaction with local culture and cuisine.

Meitetsu's initiatives come at a time when many transportation companies are struggling with driver shortages nationwide. By integrating community-centric models, they hope to stem the tide of this issue. The dual approach of developing new commercial facilities alongside nurturing foreign talent reflects the company’s forward-thinking philosophy, ensuring sustained growth and operational stability.

All stakeholders involved appear hopeful about the potential success of these projects. The regional government, educational institutions, and Meitetsu Electric Railway are committed to fostering recruitment and training methodologies capable of producing qualified and motivated bus drivers who can cater to local transportation requirements.

The launch of the Gifu Castle Rakuchi commercial facilities, coinciding with the introduction of foreign talent, marks the beginning of what could be seen as pivotal developments for the Meitetsu network. If successful, this could serve as a model for transformation and revitalization within the transportation sector at large, pointing the way for other regions grappling with similar challenges.

The innovative efforts by Meitetsu Electric Railway to recruit foreign drivers and establish appealing commercial destinations highlight their devotion to nurturing both workforce and community. This dual focus not only prioritizes operational demands but also promotes local heritage and economic vitality, ensuring both the present and future of transport and tourism flourish.
