Megan Fox And Diablo Cody Explore Jennifer’s Body Sequel

The cult classic's growing popularity raises hopes for another installment after initial criticism.

Megan Fox once felt the 2009 film Jennifer’s Body was far ahead of its time, explaining why it has become such a cult classic. The renewed interest surrounding the film has led to increasing demand for a sequel, prompting both Fox and writer Diablo Cody to discuss the prospect of bringing back the beloved horror flick.

Diablo Cody, the Oscar-winning screenwriter known for her work on Juno, has expressed excitement about the possibility of creating Jennifer’s Body 2. "I think it was always my dream, but I certainly didn’t think it would be realistic," Cody shared during an interview with Nylon. Despite the movie's initial commercial failure, she now sees the potential for the sequel to come to fruition. Cody highlights the unexpected success of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series, which emerged after the film version was not well-received, as a reason for hope. "People rarely want to make sequels to films...that don’t perform. Now I feel like it could be possible," Cody said, indicating her readiness to pitch the project around Hollywood.

Fox echoed the sentiment about the feasibility of making another installment, stating, "I don’t think it’s a hard movie to make a sequel to. I mean, they should make it at the TV series. That would be cool." Fox made her comments back in 2021 during her interview with The Washington Post, showing her willingness to explore new avenues to continue the Jennifer’s Body story. While both the actress and the writer have shown interest, news of any real development on the sequel has been scarce.

Recently, Amanda Seyfried, Fox’s co-star from the original film, hinted at the possibility of the sequel becoming reality. "I think we’re making another one," Seyfried said, as quoted by Bloody Disgusting. Although she added clarification stating, "I didn’t confirm it! I said, ‘I think.’ We’re working on it!" her comment has sparked renewed speculation among fans.

The resurgence of interest in Jennifer’s Body has been particularly rewarding for Fox and Cody, both of whom faced significant backlash during the film's initial release. Cody reflected candidly, "There was a time when it was painful for me to talk about Jennifer’s Body, because you know. That movie was a commercial failure, and I was savaged personally... It wasn’t just having a professional failure. It was hard, and I had actually gone through therapy because of my experience." The overwhelming criticism impacted Fox as well, who remained concerned about how the film would reflect on her abilities as an actress.

While discussing their experiences, Cody revealed how their shared struggles with Jennifer’s Body have kept her and Fox connected over time. She recounted, "Megan and I have talked about it on several occasions, and because Amanda kind of emerged from [the backlash] unscathed... it was really Megan who took the brunt of the criticism at the time. It traumatized her for sure, and it sucked for me as well." Contrarily, Amanda Seyfried, though she felt the film was overlooked, did not endure the same fallout as Fox and Cody - which has strained her communication with Cody. "We’ve never really had a serious conversation about what happened with Jennifer’s Body,” Cody said about Seyfried. "It was really Megan who took the brunt of the criticism. It traumatized her for sure, and it sucked for me as well."

Both Fox and Cody are now taking comfort from the film’s cult status and the positive reevaluation it has received from audiences, proving the doubters wrong. They hope this legacy will pave the way for new stories—either through films or TV series—allowing the characters to return where they left off, perhaps igniting the paranormal horror yet again with the same flair of unfiltered story-telling.

While no official announcements have been made about the sequel’s production, the interest expressed by key players involved shows there’s potential for Jennifer’s Body 2 to eventually become more than just speculation.
