McDonald's to Release Popcorn-Flavored Coke

From Coca-Cola to McDonald’s, food giants experiment with unconventional beverage flavors

Coca-Cola’s latest attempt at culinary innovation has left consumers divided. The company recently released a popcorn-flavored drink, introducing a buttery note reminiscent of everyone’s favorite movie snack to their classic beverage line. This quirky creation is currently exclusive to Germany, leaving some international fans curious but unable to taste it without a plane ticket.

Reactions to this unusual flavor have been mixed. Popular food blogger @snackolator encapsulated many fans' confusion and excitement, stating, "I love drinking some Coca-Cola with popcorn so this makes sense, but then it also doesn’t make sense because it’s in the coke itself!"

While some are intrigued, eagerly anticipating what this combination might taste like, others are more skeptical. “Why would you do something so disrespectful to a McDonald’s crispy coke,” lamented one detractor. Some adventurous souls, however, have already sung its praises, with one Instagram user noting the surprising appeal: “I just tried it this week in Germany! It was surprisingly good! I would definitely get it again.”

This isn’t Coca-Cola’s first foray into flavor experimentation. Just a few months prior, the brand introduced a limited-edition flavor celebrating African culture, described as a mix of Coke Zero with a mysterious “blazing fruit flavor.”

McDonald’s has also jumped on the popcorn beverage trend, albeit in different global locations. In Japan, McCafé by Barista outlets announced the introduction of three popcorn-themed drinks set to make waves on Instagram for their unique flavor combinations and visually appealing presentation. The new offerings—an Iced Caramel Popcorn Latte, a Hot Caramel Popcorn Latte, and a Caramel Popcorn Frappe—combine iconic movie snack vibes with a caffeine kick.

The Iced Caramel Popcorn Latte, for instance, blends the robust taste of espresso with caramel syrup and a popcorn essence. It’s all mellowed out with creamy cold milk, with whole popcorn pieces adorning the whipped cream topping. Meanwhile, the Hot Caramel Popcorn Latte offers a warm variant with foamed milk to beat the winter chill. The most extravagant of the trio, the Caramel Popcorn Frappe, stakes its claim with whole popcorn pieces and a sweet waffle cone adding flair to the already decadent beverage.

Japan isn’t alone in embracing the popcorn drink trend. In the Philippines, McDonald’s rolled out their own limited-edition caramel popcorn iced coffee drinks, featuring not only iced coffee and lattes infused with caramel popcorn syrup but also a Coffee Float and Coke Float, each enhanced with soft-serve vanilla ice cream and drizzled with that same caramel popcorn syrup for an extra sugary touch. The drinks, available across all McDonald’s branches in the Philippines, promise to satisfy that salty-sweet craving typically reserved for movie theaters.

So, what’s driving this wave of popcorn-flavored beverages? Part of it is undoubtedly the social media factor. Eye-catching drinks make for great Instagram content, enticing customers to try—and share—their experiences. But beyond the visual appeal, there’s a certain nostalgia that comes with the popcorn flavor. It harkens back to simpler times at the theater, a sense of normalcy and comfort that many find appealing in uncertain times.

One thing is certain: these unconventional flavors spark curiosity and often lead to passionate opinions. Whether you find yourself in Germany, Japan, or the Philippines, the likelihood is high that you’ll encounter a popcorn-flavored drink that’ll either horrify or delight you. As McDonald’s Japan aims to introduce more creative beverages in the future, the popcorn drink phenomenon might just be the beginning of a broader trend.

For now, as fast-food giants experiment with increasingly unusual flavor profiles, one can only wonder what’s next. Perhaps it’ll be a flavor so odd it'll swing the pendulum right back to the classics. Until then, fans and skeptics alike are left to sip and speculate, capturing each moment—right or wrong—one drink at a time. As the food blogger @snackolator wryly noted, “It's kinda weird. Maybe you could try soaking popcorn in cola. Then drink it.”
