McDonald's Stops Selling Espresso Drinks Over Machine Issues

A malfunctioning espresso machine leads to temporary menu cutbacks amid safety concerns

McDonald's has temporarily halted the sale of espresso drinks at certain locations due to issues with its espresso machines, which have become the latest source of headaches for the fast-food giant. While customers have long grumbled about ice cream machine failures, this time, the culprit is the espresso machines made by Melitta.

On November 19, 2024, The Wall Street Journal broke the news about the disruption affecting many McDonald's restaurants. Melitta, known for its CT8 espresso machines, discovered issues with faulty components in two of its models. This defect could result in steam excessively escaping, posing safety risks not just to the machinery but potentially to employees and customers alike.

"Our intent is to determine the root cause and provide a remediation plan and remedies," stated a Melitta spokesperson to The Wall Street Journal. Following this announcement, McDonald's took swift action, advising its locations to stop using these machines for at least three weeks. During this time, beloved espresso drinks like lattes, cappuccinos, and mochas are off the menu, leaving coffee aficionados searching for alternatives.

While McDonald's hasn’t detailed which specific locations are affected by this stoppage, it was reported by Nation's Restaurant News and CNN that several cities across the U.S., including Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Pittsburgh, New York, Tampa, and Louisville, Kentucky, have all seen espresso options temporarily vanish.

Despite this setback, hot and iced brewed coffee remains available, allowing loyal customers to indulge. McDonald's serves nearly eight million cups of coffee daily and was recently revamping its coffee lineup, introducing new items like the Dulce de Leche Frappé, which debuted just last month. This drink, which features caramel flavors and is available for a limited time, provides another option for coffee lovers during this espresso-free period.

The timing of this machine issue could not be worse for McDonald's, which is working diligently to recover from the impacts of a recent E. coli outbreak associated with its Quarter Pounders. This outbreak, tied to slivered onions, sickened over 100 people and even resulted in one tragic death. According to reports, McDonald's is investing $100 million to recoup losses from this serious situation by enhancing marketing efforts and offering support to franchise owners whose sales were negatively impacted.

The fast-food giant's troubles with machinery—whether it's ice cream or, now, espresso—seem to follow the chain, causing both frustration and curiosity among its customer base. It's almost humorous how the narrative has shifted from the infamous ice cream machines to another beloved beverage prep device.

Old grievances over the temperamental ice cream machines had seemingly found resolution with recent legal changes making it more straightforward for employees to troubleshoot and address issues—yet, with the spotlight now on espresso, McDonald's fans may have to brace for more adjustments.

Overall, the espresso machine mishaps have forced McDonald's to pause on espresso beverages, leading to temporary disturbances at various locations. The company's proactive measures amid the fallout from both machine malfunctions and food safety concerns indicate their commitment to both customer satisfaction and employee safety.

For now, coffee drinkers can still enjoy the standard brewed options at McDonald's, but those who love their espressos will need to wait until Melitta fully investigates the problem and returns the espresso machines to service.
