Two primary schools in Cape Town recently received much-needed learning furniture as part of the Basic Education Department's initiative to improve school conditions through public-private partnerships. On Monday, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube, alongside representatives from McDonald's South Africa and MiDesk Global, handed over desks and chairs to Nal’uxolo Primary School in Philippi and Saint Paul’s Primary School located in the Bo Kaap.
Farana Boodhram, the founder of MiDesk Global, emphasized their commitment to enhancing learning conditions. "We firmly believe every child deserves access to quality education and a nurturing learning environment. Our collaboration with McDonald's goes beyond providing furniture to children in need; it symbolizes our shared commitment to fostering hope, creativity, and a passion for learning among students. These mobile desks empower them to learn without limits," Boodhram stated. She highlighted the significance of providing functional desks equipped with USB charging ports, aimed to help students achieve their educational goals.
This initiative was driven by the Rural Education Directorate within the Basic Education Department, aiming to promote equal education quality at disadvantaged schools.
Daniel Padiachy, Chief Marketing Officer at McDonald's South Africa, also spoke during the handover, stressing the company’s broader commitment to education and community support. "Today’s initiative is not just about desks, it is about hope. It sends a clear message to these young minds: they are valued, their education matters, and we believe in their potential to shape the nation’s future," Padiachy said.
He asserted the importance of investing in children’s education to secure South Africa's future, with the donation marking the start of McDonald's plan to identify and support more schools across the country urgently needing basic educational infrastructure. Padiachy remarked, "For 30 years, McDonald's South Africa has been more than just a restaurant. Our mission has always been about more than serving food; it’s about uplifting and supporting the communities who have welcomed us."
Reflecting on the current situation, he acknowledged the challenge many students face, particularly younger grades who have had to write on the floor due to lack of proper furniture. "Thousands of children across our country still lack the basic infrastructure needed to support their education. We need all stakeholders including government, private sector, civil society and individuals to work collaboratively to bridge this gap," Padiachy urged.
The MiDesk, tagged as an innovative wheeled school bag transforming easily to functional desk and chair, includes valuable features like solar-powered light and USB charging portals. This practical solution has been endorsed by the Department of Science and Innovation and UNESCO as beneficial for enhancing classroom experiences, especially among underprivileged communities.
The donation initiative aligns with six of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the 2030 Agenda, underlining the project's commitment to fostering educational progress. Gwarube applauded the contributions of private sector partners like McDonald's, stating, "Government efforts alone are insufficient to meet the educational needs of our rapidly growing population."
