McDonald's Canada Tests New McVeggie Burger Starting March 18

The fast-food chain aims to cater to vegetarian preferences with its latest menu addition across select Canadian locations.

Starting on March 18, 2025, McDonald’s Canada will test its new McVeggie sandwich at select locations in British Columbia, Ontario, and New Brunswick.

The meal features a breaded veggie patty made from a mix of vegetables, including carrots, green beans, zucchini, peas, soybeans, broccoli, and corn, all seasoned to tantalize the taste buds.

This new offering is part of McDonald’s ongoing effort to diversify its menu and cater to the growing demand for vegetarian options. McDonald’s senior manager of culinary innovation, Jeff Anderson, stated, “We’re always looking for new opportunities to innovate and build on our menu, and the McVeggie will give even more guests the opportunity to enjoy that delicious McDonald’s flavour Canadians know and love.”

Alongside the McVeggie, a Spicy Habanero McVeggie will also be available, providing a spicier twist on the classic. This version replaces the mayo-style sauce with a zesty Habanero sauce to satisfy those craving a little more kick.

The creative process behind the McVeggie stems from a response to the evolving tastes of Canadian consumers who increasingly seek meatless alternatives. Bill Chao, who owns several McDonald’s franchises in Richmond, B.C., expressed enthusiasm for the new product. He noted, “It’s a response to diverse tastes people are looking for these days.”

The burger will be available as a stand-alone item or as part of an extra-value meal, appealing not only to vegetarians but also to anyone looking to try something new.

Feedback will be collected during the test period, which runs from March 18 to April 14, 2025. If the results are positive, a nationwide rollout could follow. McDonald’s will be testing out the McVeggie at various locations in cities including Langley, Surrey, and Richmond in B.C., as well as in Ontario and New Brunswick.

As part of its initiative to introduce vegetarian options, McDonald’s is following in the footsteps of other international branches that have successfully incorporated veggie offerings. While this is McDonald’s first veggie burger in Canada, other countries have offered various vegetarian burgers for years.

McDonald’s Canada’s previous attempts to break into the plant-based market saw the test of a Beyond Meat burger that ultimately was not rolled out, but the company remains optimistic that the McVeggie will resonate with Canadian consumers.

The fast-food giant has taken an innovative approach with the McVeggie, which is crafted from whole vegetables rather than mimicking meat, setting it apart from the competition.

Upon tasting the burger, diners can expect a familiar experience typical of McDonald’s offerings, complete with the company’s signature sesame seed bun, crisp lettuce, and the classic mayo accompaniment.

While the McVeggie burger has garnered interest, many are curious to see how it compares to other vegetarian fast food options currently available in Canada. The arrival of the McVeggie could shape the future of vegetarian fast food offered in Canada.

As the testing period unfolds, McDonald’s will analyze consumer responses to determine whether the McVeggie meets customer demands. Chao emphasized the importance of this trial, explaining, “Meanwhile, I’m excited to test it.”

The unique combination of flavors and familiar build suggest the McVeggie is poised to be a hit among those looking for a vegetarian meal. If successful, the McVeggie could pave the way for more innovative vegetarian options at the Golden Arches, appealing to a broader demographic.

With vegetarian offerings on the rise, McDonald's strategy aligns with a growing trend in the fast-food industry towards more diverse and health-conscious choices.

For the numerous fans and customers of McDonald's, the McVeggie sandwich represents an exciting expansion of the menu, with hopes that it will attract both existing customers and new diners interested in exploring vegan and vegetarian options at fast-food chains.

The McVeggie and its spicy iteration may provide a welcomed alternative for diners who appreciate the flavor profiles inherent in those ingredients, while also responding to a societal shift towards plant-based eating.

In the ever-evolving fast-food landscape, the McVeggie test could mark a significant step forward for McDonald’s in Canada as it adapts to changing consumer preferences.
