Mazagon Dock Safeguards 2,800 Schoolgirls With Cervical Cancer Vaccination

In an effort to raise awareness and protect young girls, the campaign across 50 schools mobilizes community support and medical expertise for health education.

In a major initiative to protect young girls from cervical cancer, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), a major Indian shipbuilding company, has launched a vaccination drive targeting 2,800 schoolgirls. This initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Jivika Foundation, involves a partnership with local authorities in Satara, Pakistan, and is a supreme example of operationalizing corporate social responsibility (CSR) in public health.

The vaccination campaign kicked off in schools located in Gadchiroli, Satara, Raigad, and Mumbai, marking a significant public health step forward for the regional community. Medical professionals, backed by operational staff from MDL, were mobilized to ensure that the vaccinations were carried out smoothly and efficiently. Amit Navala, MDL's CSR Officer, articulated the importance of this effort, stating, "Through this initiative, we aim to protect young girls from cervical cancer and raise awareness about preventive healthcare." The numbers are noteworthy: over 5,000 students, parents, and more than 1,000 teachers participated in the awareness campaign that preceded the vaccination drive.

As part of the campaign, the Jivika Foundation executed a broad awareness initiative that reached 50 schools. They emphasized the significance of cervical health, promoting early detection, maintenance, and the crucial role of vaccines. Aligning with their motto of preventive healthcare, the foundation secured written consent from parents before vaccinating any minors. This ensures that all patients received the necessary agreement before the vaccines were administered.

Yashni Nagarajan, CEO of Satara, expressed her appreciation for MDL's efforts, highlighting that the Tejaswini mission represents an essential step toward safeguarding women's health and tackling the burden of cancer. She stated, "Achieving our goal of making Satara a cancer-free zone is paramount, and we are grateful for MDL's support in the vaccination program." The message is clear: community collaboration underlines the drive towards healthier futures.

Cervical cancer is notably preventable if vaccines are administered in a timely manner. This point was underscored by Jignesh Patel, Founder, and Trustee of Jivika Foundation, who remarked, "Preventive care is now indispensable, and cervical cancer is one of the most preventable diseases if vaccinated at the right time. Through this initiative, we are not only providing protection but also raising awareness among students, teachers, and parents. Our team has ensured a seamless and safe vaccination process, reaching even the most remote schools for maximum impact."

The vaccination drive adopts a robust approach, prioritizing safety and efficiency by deploying well-trained physicians, nurses, and counselors at vaccination venues. The Jivika Foundation anticipated possible AEFI (Adverse Events Following Immunization) and put measures in place to minimize safety risks. Furthermore, they established a solid cold-chain logistics and last-mile delivery mechanism to maintain vaccine potency until they reached remote schools.

The vaccination initiative is part of a larger mission—Mission Tejaswini—which emphasizes cancer prevention, early screening, and free treatment at public hospitals. As part of their commitment to community wellbeing, the Jivika Foundation is promoting HPV vaccination for girls in rural areas and enhancing public health initiatives in conjunction with local government bodies.

Over the years, Jivika Foundation has made significant strides, successfully vaccinating over 300,000 girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds across multiple states including Maharashtra, Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka. They aim to eradicate cervical cancer throughout India through collaborative efforts with companies and organizations dedicated to health and safety.

Overall, this drive not only reflects a significant escalation in public health objectives but also highlights MDL's commitment to fostering resilient communities.
